Review 5024: Mas Solige, Cottage

Review by Dsevig from US

1bed/1bath cottage near Carpentras, Provence

June 2011, 1 week

A few kilometers east of Carpentras, somewhat in the country. It was a nice location with a wall enclosing the front to help with highway noise somewhat. The grounds were very nice with lavender and flowers.

The gite was part of a very large old mas with the owners home in the center with three B&B rooms - one on the ends (one had a partial kitchen) and one in the middle.

Carpentras is a good central base for day trips to much of Provence, especially the wine towns and hill towns like Gordes.

Nearby Amenities

We had to take a short drive into Carpentras to a good grocery store - we did not dine in Carpentras as we ate lunch while visiting hill towns etc. But Carpentras will have plenty of places to search out!

The House/Apartment

The Mas dates to around 1860 or so. The gite was nice and quiet with B&B rooms on each side of it that had quiet guests. There is some road noise and some from neighboring homes but not greatly so.

As I mentioned above, it is a long building with three B&B rooms, the gite and the owners two-story home, lovely climbing vines along much of the front.

Very lovely sets of tables and chairs and swings shared with other guests which is fine. No pool!

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

The furnishings were fine and the gite roomy and clean upon our arrival. Plenty of chairs in the gite. The ceiling lights kept going on and off however.

Good bathroom with shower. Lighting was minimal however due to a light being out above the sink, which had not worked for sometime, I think.

The bed was comfortable but very low to the floor. There is a large armoire for clothes with two drawers.

Nice work area with a couple of pans and utensils. It was hard to do any cooking because the two electric burners did not heat very well. Ten minutes to warm up to cook an egg. It was fine for cold dinners with a good refrigerator and work area. Rather quaint with the old wood burning bread oven.

Problems or Bonuses

I would say the 19 dinner that Corrine provides a great bargain and very tasty Provencal cooking. We enjoyed the sitting area and visiting with other guests.

Also, Olivier provided us with a laptop to use as needed for email etc., that was not part of the package.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

Both the host and hostess spoke English well. We dealt directly with Olivier for booking. We paid 385 for the week. I think this is fair with repairs to be made if lighting and burner problems are fixed.

I think they are experiencing very good bookings for much of the year with Belgians being the majority of the renters.

So book early if you want to stay with them for either the gite or B&B room.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

I would love to give an unqualified recommendation for the gite and rooms. But I do see some obvious repairs not being done timely. And we had a problem with the reservation deposit wire losing 17 along the way that they felt was a US bank problem while I tend to differ that all fees were paid up front by me!! Hard to argue but I think the problem should have been shared in part by the owner.

They are lovely people who work very hard to please guests overall and I think they will be successful despite my picky opinion. They just have to recognize repairs needed to be first rate.

Things to do in this area

This is a great area to visit the wine country and hill towns throughout the upper Provence region. Many many restaurants and markets to be well fed and shops to find nice gifts. You need a minimum of a week to get a good feel of the area while two is more like it.

We have done weekly trips to many areas in France over the last six years and I think Provence is our favorite area.
