Review 5067: Owner, Gites des Hortensias
3bed/2bath house near Pleyben, Brittany
May 2011, 1 month
We spent the month of May in one of the Gites des Hortensias, Kroas ar Gorreg,(near Pleyben) Brittany, France. We found the listing on the Gabinohome website and contacted the owners, Michel and Sylvie about a month rental.
They have a well defined contract, and we wire transferred our funds easily, and our damage deposit was refunded in euros on our last day.
Michel's father, Yves, was born in the cottage we rented, and Yves, now in his 80's, maintains the gardens and helps Michel and Sylvie keep up the property. Michel and Sylvie live adjacent behind the little row of four gites. They are built of limestone blocks, roofed with slate, and very private, walled or hedged from each other and soundproof. There is a garage, family room, kitchen area, large dining room and living room with large screen TV, first level full bath and bedroom, second bathroom and shower on the first floor, and two bedrooms upstairs. Room and beds enough for a comfortable six adults and two additional single beds. It was more space than two people needed.
We had a lovely patio with barbeque, full kitchen, refrigerator and a large freezer, washing machine, and cable television. No cable/Internet, but Internet is available at the cafe and library in town, a five minute drive. The house is oriented N/S so lovely views over the valley to the east, and a wonderful place to sit in the sun in the morning, drink coffee and contemplate your day, and a shady table and chairs for your evening cider, bread, cheese and sausage. The other gites in the row are rented to French families, who obviously had private WiFi (pronounced "wee-fee"), as new secure signals came and went over the month.
Pleyben is located very near the Nantes-Brest Canal, and is a 30 minute drive to the north, west and south coasts of Brittany. Our cottage was 75 minutes from the Rennes airport, where we picked up our leased car from the dealer in town.
Yves, Michel and Sylvie, and the neighboring farmer and other residents checked in whenever they saw us, not intrusively, but always willing to answer questions. Sylvie called the car lease office at the end of our trip to help make return arrangements. Maps, park information, up to date site brochures and discount carnets, restaurant and village market calendars were ready in the bookshelves, and any questions about things to see and do were enthusiastically answered.
Yves has self-published memoirs and local history and patrimony guides to this area. Brittany is proud of its individualism and strong Nazi resistance activities, its farming, cider making, medieval linen and hemp industries and its connection to the sea. The standing stones and pre-historic monuments are everywhere, and Pleyben turned out to be central to everything, but peaceful and friendly.
