1bed/1bath cottage in Honfleur, Normandy

Cottage at Le Fond de la Cour, photo by SuzanneF

October, 2011, 6 Nights

Located in Honfleur just a quick walk to the Vieux Bassin. Very convenient.

Nearby Amenities

There is a coffee shop just around the corner which is open during season (unfortunately, it had closed on October 1). However, Amanda very kindly offered us breakfast at her B&B or at another B&B just around the corner for 3 per person Although we didn't take her up on it - she even offered to deliver to our cottage!

The House/Apartment

The building is a totally renovated cottage; however, the remainder of the property is historical. To get to the cottage, you walk through the courtyard of the main building, then through a lovely garden area. Right now there are three B&B rooms in the main building. However, while we were there Amanda showed us the renovation in progress of three additional self-catering apartments which should open soon. The entire property is lovely.

The cottage has a small kitchen and living area on the first floor. The bedroom is located on a second floor mezzanine. Nice shower on second floor, toilet on first floor.

There is a private terrace with lounge chairs and table and chairs at the cottage. There were also tables and chairs in the garden area as well as in the courtyard of the main building. No pool.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

Everything was clean and neat.

I found the bed comfortable, my husband found it adequate. The only warning here is that the bedroom has a sloped ceiling - you need to watch your head. We didn't have a problem, but someone who is very tall might.

The kitchen was adequate. Small two-burner stove, no oven. Microwave and coffee maker. You could cook a meal, but space is somewhat limited. Amanda did tell us that she hopes to renovate the kitchen area soon - so maybe by next season it will be upgraded.

Problems or Bonuses

One of the nice surprises was the first evening when we returned from dinner the entire courtyard area was lit up with candles! Certainly added to the feeling of relaxation!

Agency and Representatives (and price)

We booked directly with Amanda. She was very prompt in replying to our emails. She speaks both English and French. Our price in October (booked about 10 months in advance) was 100/night. On the website it does show 120.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

We originally found Le Fond de la Cour through a recommendation from Dave and Aralyn McMane (SlowTravel Honfleur experts). I would definitely recommend staying here. If not in the cottage, then one of the B&B rooms. The self-catering apartments under renovation also look like they will be wonderful when completed.

Both Amanda and Craig are the consummate hosts doing everything possible to ensure that your stay is wonderful. The little map they provide of Honfleur with restaurant recommendations was so helpful.

Things to do in this area

We were here during Honfleur's Shrimp Festival which was great fun. We also visited the D-Day Beaches, German and American Cemeteries, drove the Route du Cidre and stopped at Giverny on the way to the airport.
