Review 5291: Owner, Apartment Bastille-Marais (#103254)

Review by Jo & Den from Canada who is a SlowTrav Contributor

Studio apartment in 11th arrondissement, Paris

May 9 to 20, 2012, 11 nights

The studio is located in the 11th arrondissement, about a 10 minute walk to the Bastille. This was the first time we stayed in this area and we just loved it. It is in a modern apartment building with elevator. Everything you need is close by and we always felt safe walking around with our 8 year-old grandson, even late at night.

Nearby Amenities

You are spoilt for choice with this apartment ~ three bakeries in a one block radius, supermarket a block away, cheese shops, butchers, wine stores, tabac, cafes, restaurants, shopping ~ everything is very close at hand. Public transportation options are wonderful ~ Voltaire metro station on line 9 and the stop for many bus lines, including the wonderful 69, are a block away. The Bastille metro station, on popular line 1, is about a 10 minute walk, as is the wonderful Bastille market which is open on Thursdays and Sundays.

The House/Apartment

The apartment is in a modern building. Although you go down one floor to access it, it's on the ground floor but facing your own private garden, so it is very quiet and peaceful. There is a comfortable double bed in an alcove, a double fold out futon in the sitting area, a dining area with table and four chairs, a small but well equipped kitchen, a large bathroom with tub/shower sink and washing machine, a separate small room for the toilet and a very large closet for luggage storage and built in shelves for your clothes. We found there was good lighting and good natural light from the patin door and large door open to the garden, as well as a window from the kitchen to the garden.

There is a beautiful private garden filled with flowers and trees and with an outdoor wooden table and four chairs. It is hard to believe you are in the middle of Paris when you are sitting outside sipping champagne and listening to the birds chirping. This is a very unique feature for an apartment in Paris, especially at this price.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

The apartment has even freshly painted and new bed linens have been provided. The bed and futon were very comfortable and there was plenty of space for two adults and a child to spread out, eat, watch TV, read and play on the computer with the free WiFi. There were four dining chairs, the futon and two wicker armchairs in the living area and the outdoor chairs in the garden. The apartment was clean on arrival and we had everything we needed for our stay.

The beds were very comfortable with plenty of pillows and extra linens and blankets if needed. The bathroom was large and had a separate washing machine, which worked very well. The water pressure in the tub/shower was great and there was always hot water available.

Although we didn't cook, we could have; there were plenty of pots, pans and dishes. There is a ceramic cook-top with twoburners, a microwave, a dishwasher, a fridge, a coffee maker and toaster - everything you need to enjoy all the delicious food Paris has to offer.

Problems or Bonuses

We were hesitant to stay in this area since we had always stayed in the Marais and thought we would be too far from the center. We were surprised at how much was available to us in the surrounding areas and how convenient the transportation options were. We would love to stay in this area again.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

Communication with the owners was very easy and efficient by e-mail. We paid half the rent on booking and the other half in cash on arrival. The onsite person was there to meet us when we arrived and showed us around the apartment, taking her time to explain everything to us. She gave us her contact information if we needed her and was right on time when we left so we could hand over the keys. We found the rental price (available on the website) very reasonable for an apartment of this size and with these amenities in the heart of Paris.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

We would absolutely stay here again and would recommend it to our friends and family without hesitation.

The free WiFi and calling back to Canada was an added bonus that helped make our stay one of the best we've had in eight trips to Paris.

Things to do in this area

You are in the heart of a real Parisian neighbourhood with anything you would want or need very close by. We enjoyed shopping at the Simply supermarket around the corner, buying our metro tickets at the tabac on the corner, buying our morning pain au chocolat and croissants at the wonderful bakeries, and catching the 69 bus just a block away.
