Review 5348: Owner, House in Lama (#594487)

Review by Carter from US

2bed/1bath house outside Lama, Corsica

June 16-23, 2012, One week

The townhouse was part of a small cluster of five or six other townhouses, with a common owner, just outside the small mountain village of Lama, in the Balagne region of Haut Corse. Lama is a small village, located at around 2000 feet, about 10 miles from sea. The nearest substantial towns are Ponte Leccia (to the south) and L'Ile Rousse (to the north). If you want to see photos, go to homeaway.com and look at property #594487.

Nearby Amenities

A rental car is a necessity here. There was a small store in the town (five minute walk) where you could purchase high quality wine, olive oil, honey, coffee, and other food items, but there is no grocery or convenience store in town. There are three restaurant/cafes in town, but we did not eat at any of them.

The House/Apartment

The house was clean. There is an open kitchen/dining room/living room on the first floor, along with two bed-rooms and a bathroom. There is a bedroom, bathroom and a small loft upstairs. The other houses were occupied with other (mostly French) families while we were there but noise was not an issue at all. There is no A/C, which was not an issue when we were there, even though it was quite hot (at least 85 degrees) during the day.

The best feature of the house is the lovely sitting area outside the first floor entrance, with incredible views of the surrounding mountains and valleys, and the beautiful pool, which is shared with the other units. We spent most of our time there.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

The furnishings were adequate, but not great. The kitchen was adequate for simple meals. There is a barbecue grill outside. The apartment was clean. The selling point of this house is the setting and the outside common areas, not the furnishings.

The beds were flimsy, but adequate. There are three bedrooms, with two queen sized beds and two twins. Bathrooms were small but adequate and the showers were good. We had two kids (10 and 12) and two adults and the apartment had plenty of room for us. It would have been a bit tight for six or more guests.

Kitchen was okay for simple meals. Pots and pans not high quality, but adequate.

Problems or Bonuses

I was somewhat disappointed with the interior of the house, but the wonderful outside areas made up for it.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

The owner was highly responsive and a pleasure to deal with. His English was pretty good. He also speaks Italian, and French, of course. I think the normal rate for the time we were there is around 990, but we paid less because we booked at the last minute.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

I do recommend the house, for the reasons stated above, especially the beauty and peacefulness of the surroundings. The hesitation I have is that the village, though lovely, is somewhat isolated. It is located up a steep, winding mountain road that some would consider difficult to drive. We found ourselves spending a lot of time in the car driving to the beaches and towns in Haut Corse. We felt the trade-off was worth it, though.

Things to do in this area

Corsica is a fantastic destination. The natural beauty is unsurpassed and the food and wine (especially the wine) are as good as anywhere we have been. I was surprised to find that there are no reviews here for other Corsica vacation rentals. There is so much to do in this area, that I don't know where to start. Our favorite mountain swimming hole is under the Genoese bridge just below the town of Asco, about 40 minutes away. Our favorite beach in the north was Aregno Plage, in Algajola, and our favorite Balagne town was Pigna. We also spent a week in southern Corsica, where had a very different flavor.
