Review 5429: Chateau de Monfreville, Pond Cottage

Review by Trish P from CO

4bed/3bath apartment near Isigny sur Mer, Normandy

July 28 - Aug. 3, 2012, 1 week

Pond Cottage is located on the grounds of the Chateau de Monfreville, an estate now operated as a vacation camp with the rental of this one guest house. It is located near the tiny community of Monfreville, 10 k. or so from Isigny sur Mer, a small village, and less than five miles south of Omaha Beach. The Chateau is surrounded by farms and fields and is in the Cotentin Nature Preserve. D-Day sites are easily accessible.

Nearby Amenities

A car is necessary, as there are no services within walking distance. Nearest grocery store is in Isigny.

The House/Apartment

Pond Cottage is in an older, completely remodeled, stone building beside the main chateau. Half the building is an apartment for the owner's mother, the other half is the rental unit. Building is two-story, with sitting room, dining room, kitchen, bedroom and bath and laundry room on ground floor. Upstairs are three bedrooms, one with en suite and two which share one bathroom.

There's a lovely private covered patio outside the dining room, with dining table and chairs; private lawn area with games (croquet, e.g.); no pool, but a "swimming pond" shared with the campers.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

The house and furnishings were in good shape, comfortable and cozy, sufficient chairs for the six of us, and a piano for good measure. Everything was super clean.

Bedrooms were nicely furnished, comfortable, and clean. The en suite bath which my husband and I used was quite modern, clean and in excellent condition.

We cooked almost all meals, and found sufficient equipment for anything we wanted to do in the kitchen.

Problems or Bonuses

All good surprises -- lots of farm animals, which we enjoyed immensely; spectacular countryside, so pastoral and quiet; an Isigny bakery would deliver breakfast pastries if reserved the night before; and an excellent dinner available one night when the owners, Paul & Zoe, did a fun "Moule-Frites" night for all the guests for a very nominal charge.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

Booked directly with the owner on their website. They are English and were very welcoming and easy to deal with. For first week of August, we paid 950.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

Our entire group was delighted with the Pond Cottage and would definitely stay there again and recommend it to anyone.

Things to do in this area

Immersed in the history of D-Day. One day was a private tour with Overlord Tour, which was incredible. Our guide was Sean Claxton and he was wonderful. We spent one day at Mont. St. Michel, which was interesting, but was so packed with tourists it was less than wonderful. Glad we did it, but it's not the best experience I've ever had.
