1bed/1bath apartment in the 6th arrondissement, Paris

When

October 2-9 2012, One Week

Location

This rental in the sixth arrondissement. was a fantastic location. It was close to several metros, Odeon being the closest.

Nearby Amenities

There were many bars and coffee shops within a block or two. A Carrefour was less than a five minute walk and there was a Paul and Eric Keyser as well. The Buci market was also a short walk. This apartment was in the heart of the Buci market area. There are good restaurants everywhere of all types.

The House/Apartment

The apartment was very quiet. The apartment overlooks a courtyard and there were very few people coming and going. There is commercial space on the ground floor but they used their commercial entrances. I would say there were less than twenty apartments. The windows provided a great deal of light considering that it was in a courtyard.

Garden

There was no outdoor space.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

The apartment needs a good cleaning. Some of the towels were frayed and stained. The bedspread, which matches the wall paper, also needs a good cleaning.

There is plenty of seating in the living room as the apartment is quite large for Paris. The couch has a large piece of fabric covering it which is not a slipcover and resembles a large tablecloth. I understand the need to protect their furniture but this did not work.

There was no dining room. The kitchen table had four low stools.

Bedrooms/Bathrooms

The bed was excellent. Sheets were good as well. The bathroom was fine and actually had some drawers in the vanity. Plenty of hot water and good water pressure. They could use more storage as most of it is taken up with supplies for the apartment.

Kitchen

The kitchen also needs work. The few pots and pans have to be retrieved using a six foot ladder and are nestled in some Pyrex bowls. I am not steady enough on my feet to perform this kind of thing. There is a bare minimum of utensils. Only a three inch paring knife and a bread knife. The kitchen had grease stains on the wall that took away from the very pretty mural on the kitchen wall. However, there was a coffee press and toaster as well as a microwave and dishwasher. There are plenty of dishes and enough wineglasses. There are low stools at the kitchen table which was fine for us. The dryer took forever but as long as you knew this it worked well. We did not cook except for breakfast and snacks.

Problems or Bonuses

When we approached Porter about some of the problems, he acknowledged that it had its issues but that they had a lot of repeat renters. I can understand this because in spite of its issues I might rent it again. I would be prepared for it and would bring a few things with me.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

We did have some trouble getting return emails from the agency although they were very good when they did answer. Michelle was late in letting us in the apartment although the person on the phone insisted he was in the apartment. He took very little time to show us the apartment and was quite brusque. We figured most of the things out and made do with things we couldn't figure out.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

In spite of its shortcomings this is a fantastic apartment. Large, full of light and quiet. The location is fabulous. The apartment is probably not the best for those that want to cook all their meals but for us, it was fine. My husband would go back next week. I would like to see the owners replace some of the towels and work on the kitchen but most people would be happy here.

Things to do in this area

There are wonderful restaurants within a 10 minute walk in all price ranges. Semilla was excellent. There is an adorable bistro about 50 feet from the door that we wanted to try but ran out of time. We walked to the fifth and had a couple of wonderful meals and the Rue Mofftard market is a must. There are several bakeries and if you want a place to have coffee and watch the world go by, there are many choices.
