Review 5473: Owner, Les Pervenches
2bed/1.5bath house near Saulieu, Burgundy
September 2012, 1 week
Les Pevenches is in a small hamlet about 10 minutes from Saulieu, the nearest town of any size. Saulieu is a lovely town of about 2,600 best known for the three-star restaurant Le Relais Bernard Loiseau. It is near the home of the delightful owners, M. et Mme Leger. The area is very rural, but there are lots of places well worth visiting within a drive of an hour or less, which include Vezelay, Beaune, Autun, Flavigny-sur-Ozerain (where the movie "Chocolat" was filmed). Dijon is and hour and fifteen minutes.
A car is essential. We found everything we needed in Saulieu, Not only was there a supermarket, there were several patisseries/boulangeries, several butchers, and two fromageries.
The rental was in very good shape and spotlessly clean when we arrived. It is on two floors with the living/dining area and kitchen plus a the 1/2 bath downstairs and the bedrooms and bathroom upstairs. It was very well supplied with everything we needed. The beds were made, plenty of towels were in the bathroom. There were spices and staples plus towels and paper towels in the kitchen.
There was a barbecue and a table and chairs behind house. Nearby there was a play area for children with a swing set and soccer goal, plus a lovely play house. The outside area was lovely and private. There is not a pool.
The furnishings were in very good shape. The house spotlessly clean. The dinning table was large, with plenty of chairs. My husband and I had groups over for dinner a couple of evenings and there was more than enough seating and dishes for the eight of us at dinner. Not all French rentals have a sofa, this one does.
The bedrooms were lovely and the beds were comfortable. The bathroom was well laid out and the shower was great. There isn't a bathtub, but that wasn't a problem for us. The bedrooms were very tastefully furnished.
The kitchen was well supplied with everything we needed for cooking. There were plenty of decent quality pots and pans and lots of plate and silverware. There is a dishwasher and soap was supplied for it. There isn't much counter space which is pretty standard in most of the French rentals we have seen. The refrigerator is large.
Problems or Bonuses
The couple who owns the gite could not have been nicer. They had a large lovely bouquet of flowers from there garden on the buffet. There was a bottle of local wine and some home made apricot jam waiting in the kitchen. Plus they had a basket of warm gougeres (cheesy puff pastries popular in Burgundy) for us when we arrived. They told us we would find the area very quiet and that was absolutely true. There were no cows or sheep or chickens which not only meant it was quiet, there also weren't flies.
Agency and Representatives (and price)
We could not have been treated better. The Legers, the couple who own and manage the gite, do not speak English and so if you are going to stay there you should try to learn a little French before your visit. We paid €350 for a week in early September 2012.
Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?
We would stay here again and recommend this rental to anyone without any qualifications.
Things to do in this area
This rental is in rural Burgundy. There are villages to visit, wine to taste, and if you have the money, a three start restaurant in which to eat (we didn't eat there). We were in the area for a wedding and were busy with family much of the time. We had never been to the area and were charmed by Saulieu. We cooked most of our dinners except for the meals related to the wedding. We found time to visit Autun which we liked very much. We also visited Vezelay and Flavigny-sur-Ozerain. Menbers of our family went to Beaune. We had been there twice before and so that day we went to Autun. Beaune is wonderful.
