Review 5480: Domaine de Montanty, Gite

Review by LizR from Canada

Cottages near Gramat, Pyrenees

June 2-9, 2012, One week

Domaine de Montanty (Midi-Pyrénées, Lot Valley) consists of four independent gites in an idyllic country setting 4 km from Gramat. The event was a family reunion (20 adults and four children). Domaine de Montanty ticked all the boxes for us: four separate kitchens, allowing us to be together yet retain some privacy, with plenty of space for parked cars, hiking and cycling gear. Everyone loved the area and ventured out daily by foot, car or bicycle.

Nearby Amenities

It is necessary to have a car. Gramat, four kilometers away, had everything we needed. We did most of our own cooking, but Gramat has a variety of restaurants, cafes and grocery stores.

The House/Apartment

The gites are stone, beautifully renovated and maintained. The landscaping is gorgeous, old stone walls surrounding the property, climbing roses.

Each gite has an outside sitting area and could be private or shared. Since it was a family reunion, we shared it all. There is a beautiful pool but the liner had broken during the winter and was being repaired. The owner offered compensation for the lack of the pool.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

Furniture was in good shape. All the gites were spotless. Plenty of extra seating.

The beds were very comfortable. As with most gites, you rent the bed linen or bring your own. Towels are not provided. We rented bed linen and brought our own towels. Bathrooms were modern, good water pressure, always had lots of hot water.

Kitchens were great. We had everything necessary to make complete meals, which we did daily.

Each gite has a clothes washer and outdoor lines for drying. No dish washer.

Problems or Bonuses

The only surprise was that it far exceeded our expectations! It's much prettier than it appears online. Our requirements were:

  • Rural France
  • Clean
  • Affordable for the university students as well as us retirees.

There is Internet if you have a "key" but no WiFi. This was the only downside, but the office de tourisme in Gramat has free WiFi.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

All correspondence was with Pascal and Claudine Delorme, owners, who also live on the property. Every email was answered promptly and all questions answered. No problems with deposits. Pascal speaks pretty good English, and he suffered through our basic French. We were given a reduced rate because we rented the entire place. Pascal and Claudine were delightful hosts, and brought a tray of local specialty food to our family dinner one night. Pascal took some of us on a fabulous hike, an area we would never have found ourselves.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

We would absolutely stay here again. A lovely time each evening was when everyone gathered by the road in silence as a sheepherder and his dog moved the sheep from one pasture to another.

Things to do in this area

Rocamadour is close - go early. Padirac caves are very interesting. Many pretty little towns nearby. Autoire was stunning. This is superb cycling country.
