Review 5506: Owner, Marais Garden Apartment (#49273)

Review by Yggdrasil from Western Australia

Studio apartment in Marais, Paris

January 2013, 6 days

This lovely ground floor period apartment is located almost adjacent to Marche des Enfants Rouge, on the Corner of Rue Charlot and Rue Bretagne. Very secure and private, if steps are a problem, which they would have been for us, this apartment had two steps down into the courtyard only. The area was easy to navigate, and very comfortable to be located in. The apartment looked out onto a small private courtyard.

Nearby Amenities

Four metro stations were located within about 500m (we usually used Temple), and a large Monoprix was about 400m away, with the market and a great Fromagerie on the corner, and a Franprix supermarket about 100 - 200 meters away from the door. Also other small vendors and shops located adjacent to the intersection, cafes and a lovely small fenced park on the way to the Metro. Didn't sample the restaurants as we cooked in the well appointed kitchen.

The House/Apartment

The building is 17th century, and features casement windows and heavy period beams showing the age and history of the building. Limestone walls were a lovely cozy feature too. What a lovely, very quiet apartment. You are asked also keep noise to a minimum in consideration for the neighbors and this suited us perfectly. There was about eight other apartments in the location, which is fewer than I had experienced previously.

There was a nice little courtyard garden outside the bedroom/loungeroom windows which you walk past to the front door.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

The furniture was in very good shape. We liked to use the spare, folding chairs to use our lap top and sit to eat as they felt sturdier for our large frames. Couch was comfortable, and though subdued, there was lots of lights if you really wanted more than evening lighting. There were lots of books of all kinds, with loads of guide books, included WiFi (essential for us), DVD, music and satellite TV, which tucks away out of sight if desired.

The combined lounge/bedroom which had a Queen bed and double fold down sofa bed. We personally found the bed and sofa mattress (the latter was new) a little firm for us.

The bathroom was well appointed with a comfortable bath, lots of hot water, and the usual accoutrements, as well as the washing machine and drier. There were drawers and cupboards for personal items and clothing.

The kitchen was one of the best and easiest to use I have stayed in. The best part was everything in that kitchen was clean and fresh. You didn't feel like you needed to washing things before using them. Main bins were located outside the door, we rarely heard anyone else putting things in them, so that was convenient for us.

There were a few necessities left by other tenants such as olive oil, seasonings, dish detergent etc, which was nice. But nothing old or tatty looking.

Problems or Bonuses

We stayed in January and the heating was very efficient. We had a large folder with everything we needed to know to work everything clearly outlined, as well as maps etc., but did have need to call Chris for some clarification. He was happy to have a call to say we had settled in also. Finally, unexpectedly, there was a taxi strike in Paris, and Chris spent considerable time trying to find us transport for the next morning, and his effort was very much appreciated. To no avail, no driver would work, so we actually did manage to make it to the Republique Metro with all our bags and extra shopping!

The only downside is you need to book this lovely little spot so far in advance. We would love to stay here again, and will if we can plan far enough in advance!

Agency and Representatives (and price)
