house, sleeps 10, in Castelnaudary, Languedoc-Roussillon WhenSeptember 13 - 27, 2003, two weeks LocationThe wonderful house was atop a hill a brief distance outside of the town of Castelnaudary. It was very secluded and had fabulous views of the surrounding farmland and the Pyrenees mountains to the west. Nearby AmenitiesNo amenities in walking distance but the Geant grocery was about 3 minutes drive. The town was about 10 minutes by car and had everything one could ask for. The House/ApartmentThe house was built in 1910 or so. It was wonderfully restored two years ago to a very high standard. It is nicely and comfortably decorated and the grounds are lovely. GardenThere is a pool; there is a nice outdoor cooking area with a large table and chairs and there are other groups of chairs around the property. There is also a rooftop deck with fabulous 360 degree views. Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living AreasThe house was in excellent condition and beautifully decorated. There were sofas and chairs in the living room. Also cable TV. Large dining room table with 12 chairs and a large country table in the kitchen. Bedrooms/BathroomsThe beds were the most comfortable I have ever slept on. The bedrooms were quite spacious and the views from all windows were spectacular. We all felt that way. The bathrooms were quite nice. 3 full and 2 halfs. Good water pressure and great shower heads. Tubs and Shower stalls in all bathrooms. KitchenThe kitchen was great - dishwasher, microwave, large refrigerator and an electric stove. There is also an Aga but it was turned off for the summer. Lots of plates and glasses and cups and pots and pans. Problems or BonusesThis house is on 5 levels if you count the basement where the two washers and the dryer are located and the roof top. It would not be good for anyone who had a problem with steps. The one drawback was not enough hanging space but I expect that the owner will take care of tht before next year. Agency and Representatives (and price)Everyone at Just France was great and everything was very smoothly handled. The onsite person is the owner who is English and fabulous. Do you recommend this vacation rental to others? This is a fabulous property - probably the best we have every had in 6 or 7 rentals in Europe. There is plenty to do in the area but it is not a touristy region except for Carcassonne. Things to do in this areaThere are very good restaurants in Castelnaudary - it is the home of Cassoulet, after all. We enjoyed "Le Tirou" very much. Carcassonne is about 30 minutes away and we loved both the walled town and the "new" town. Good shopping there. We were close to Toulouse which is interesting. We toured Mirepoix which is wonderful and went into the caves at Niaux to see the prehistoric drawings. Revel is close and has a great market. Cordes sur Ciel is not too far so there is plenty to do in the region. This review is the opinion of a Slow Travel member and not of slowtrav.com. |
