June 2004, one week

Our family recently rented this fabulous 16th century house in the Lot Valley of France. The location was pefect for us. We loved being close to Cahors and Figeac, and made a few trips to St Cirq Lapopie.

Nearby Amenities

There is a small bakery at the bottom of the hill that is open Tuesday-Sunday, and a small grocer about a mile away. We did most of our shopping in Cajarc, about 20 minutes away.

The House/Apartment

The home is very beautifully restored. Wendy and her husband had originally bought the home to live in, but he was transferred to Vietnam by his company.

The living room features a bank of casement windows with views of St Cirq Lapopie and the Lot valley below. There is a quality sound system and the owner provided a selection of excellent music.

The town of Tour de Faure was named for the tower wich is part of this property. e did not get to see inside the tower, but it has been mostly restored. I would love to see inside!

The home's exterior is perfect. There is a large terrace with table and chairs for dining under the stars. The swimming pool and surrounding terrace afford luxurious lounging. There is a large, built-in charcoal grill and outdoor refrigerator for holding beverages or food.

Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas

The interior of the home features many lovely pieces of antique furniture, tile and hardwood floors, and special touches. I loved the guest bath off the dining hall. Wendy found beautiful paneling that she had restored as well as a gorgeous sink. She has excellent taste and you can tell she put a lot of love into the project.

Upstairs, there are three bedrooms. The master has a very comfortable queen sized bed and a nicely updated bath with separate tub and shower. There is another bedroom with a full sized bed, set under the eves at the back of the house and a twin bed off the family room. The family room is large and has a TV, dining table, desk with a laptop set up with internet connection, and lots of books. On the lower level there is another twin bed room and full bath with shower. There is also a laundry room with washer and dryer.

The home features a huge dining hall with massive fireplace, a nicely renovated and modern kitchen with full sized fridge (with ice maker!), gas stove and dishwasher, plus a large breakfast bar. The kitchen was well equipped for the many meals we prepared during our stay.

Agency and Representatives (and price)

I rented through French Connections, which is a direct-from-owner site. This was my first attempt at renting without an agency, and I admit I was nervous, as I had to send a 50% wire transfer deposit on booking. To ease my mind, I made a call to the owner. This was not cheap, as Wendy lives in Vietnam! Wendy is a Canadian and therefore speaks perfect English.

Do you recommend this vacation rental to others?

I truly loved our stay at Tour de Faure and would definitely rent it again. However, be warned --- Wendy is trying to sell the home, so you need to hurry for it may not be available next year.

Also, though Wendy and her husband lived in the house with their two young children, I would be a bit concerned. The home has steep, narrow, tile stairs leading both up and down. Though the owners installed a door at the top of the stairs to keep young children from venturing off unattended, I would be nervous. The stairs would certainly pose a problem for someone who is physically challenged.

Things to do in this area

The Lot and Cele Valleys are perfect for slow travel, as they offer a multitude of activities, from hiking and walking, caving, fishing, eating (this is the land of foie gras and confit, Cahors wine and walnuts), sight seeing or just relaxing. There are the caves at Pech Merle only 15 minutes away. Cahors is about 40 minutes away and Figeac is about 45 minutes. Rocamador is a little over an hour away.

Canoe rental is available in Bouzies, just a few miles down the road.

St Cirq Lapopie is one of the Plus Beaux villages of France and well worth a visit.
