Google Maps on Slow Travel

Google Maps are maps that you can move by dragging or and zoom in and out of for more or less detail. Many areas also have detailed satellite views. Google Maps are currently in beta, so the same level of detail is not available for the whole world. For example, you can zoom in and see buildings in Rome, but you can't get good satellite detail for most of the Tuscany countryside.

These Google Maps Were Created by Slow Travelers

We have created the ST Google Map Maker so Slow Travelers can create their own annotated Google Maps to enhance our travel notes and trip reports.

Note: These pages may be slow to download (works best on broadband), but once they have downloaded the maps work at a good speed. The map pages are designed in a larger format than the rest of the website; they are 1000 pixels wide.

  • Portugal: DavidX, This is a joint effort by Andrew and Davidx. It is set so that it shows the whole of Portugal but you can get a clearer picture of any area by raising the zoom level. For example, it takes a very high zoom level to really appreciate Andrew's numerous markers in Coimbra or my suggested itineraries from Lisbon and Porto. Printable marker list

  • Southeast England: WestSussexBird (WSB), Printable marker list
  • United Kingdom, Cornwall, The House on the Strand: Pauline, October 2006: Map to go with the book "The House on the Strand", by Daphne Du Maurier (1969) Printable marker list
  • United Kingdom, Cotswolds: Pauline, August 2006. The Cotswolds According to Me. Towns, villages, sights of the Cotswolds in England. Updated September 2006 with Slow Views - click SV in Information Window to see a zoomed in satellite view. Read the Travel Notes. Printable marker list
  • United Kingdom, Devon, Dartmoor: DavidX, September 2006. Dartmoor and southern Devon. Where markers are close [as in Plymouth] zoom in about 3 or 4 levels higher. Paths across Moorland are only approximate indications of route, If you plan to walk on the north part of the moor PLEASE SEE THE BLACK MARKER CALLED 'ARTILLERY RANGE' AND ITS 'READ MORE.' • United Kingdom, England and Wales, North: DavidX, England and Wales Visitors' Map north of Bristol - London line showing large cities [not necessarily recommended for a visit, but included to help you visualise the position of other marked places], National Parks [my favourites are indicated by '*'] and Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty [see note below]. You will also find some favourite cathedrals and other must-visits.
Areas of Natural Beauty [AONBs] are legally designated areas recognized for the distinctive character of beauty each contains and protected under special regulations. I have added a '*' to AONBs which I personally recommend as holiday areas and '**' to some areas without official recognition which I consider of greater beauty than some of the designated AONBs. AONB markers with neither of these symbols are designated AONBs that I don't necessarily recommend for a holiday. In some cases I'm quite open about my total ignorance of the area. With others I personally shouldn't find enough stimulation for a holiday. Since this is highly subjective you might still want to try. All of them have websites in the 'read more' sections. • United Kingdom, England and Wales, South: DavidX, England and Wales Visitors Map south of London - Bristol line. The map shows all National Parks and designated AONBs in the area, outstanding cathedrals, larger cities and other must-sees.
For both National Parks and AONBs, I have added a '*' to note those which I personally recommend. This map includes some designated Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty [those with no '*'] where I should not want to commit as much as a week of holiday. When I see SOME of the areas on this map classified as AONBs and I remember the areas on my northern map, that are not, I feel the need to modify the proverb 'Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder' to 'Beauty is in the eyes of the SANE beholder.' • United Kingdom, Gardens: WendyAsh, DavidX, WestSussexBird, Gardens, mostly in England, but with some in Scotland and Wales. The map is centered on southern England; use the controls to move around or zoom out to see other gardens. Note: some of the gardens are so close together that their markers overlap; please note that Hidcote in the Cotswolds hides Kiftsgate Court and Trebah in Cornwall hides Glendurgan! Also note: NT or EH after a garden's name indicates that it is owned by the National Trust or English Heritage respectively. HHA indicates that the owner belongs to the Historic Houses Association. NTS indicates National Trust of Scotland. Each of these organisations offers season tickets that are excellent value if you visit more than a few of their properties. Printable marker list
  • United Kingdom, Hadrians Wall: PatrickLondon, December 2006: Hadrian's Wall in northern England. The Wall was built in the AD120s by the Emperor Hadrian from coast to coast to protect the Roman province against the unconquered tribes to the north. A National Trail runs along the line of the Wall, passing many remains and offering access to some of the most beautiful scenery in Britain; and there are good bus and train links making day trips easy. This is a first Google-sketch of a map, so please follow the links for official information and advice about maps and walking guides. See Trip Report 1057. Printable marker list
  • United Kingdom, Lake District: DavidX, October 2006: Lake District National Park in northern England. You may be surprised by the shortage of some markers but I've never been up Skiddaw, the other 3000 footer and I've kept to my favourites. Printable marker list
  • United Kingdom, London: PatrickLondon, February 2007: London, England. I've marked the main points people ask about, and some more unusual ones, linking each marker to a relevant website, each of which may well link on to a lot of other information. It's not a comprehensive guide, but even so, there are so many markers that it will take some time to load them all. I've used the category "villages" to mark the main neighbourhoods you may hear about. You'll find arts galleries in with museums, theatres and concert halls under "public services" and sporting venues and events under "sights", which also includes a range of attractions that didn't seem to fit into other categories. Please feel free to suggest additions! Admin Note: There is no Walking Route 4 on the map; it's a database glitch we're working on but didn't want to hold up publication any longer. • United Kingdom, Scotland, Northern: DavidX, Scotland north of Fort William. You will need to click on the west arrow to see some of the islands. I realise my huge gaps here and I hope somebody will do a map to compensate. I simply don't have the knowledge or experience of these areas. Printable marker list
  • United Kingdom, Scotland, Southern: DavidX, Scotland south of Fort William. You will need to scroll the map to the west for the islands and Moidart and south for the Rhins of Galloway. Printable marker list
  • United Kingdom, Wales, Pembrokeshire Coast: DavidX, November 2006: [Mainly north of] Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, Wales. I guess you can tell roughly from the location of the markers where the house was that we took for a total of 11 weeks in three years when our children were young. Printable marker list
  • United Kingdom, Wales, Snowdonia National Park: DavidX, November 2006: Snowdonia National Park and Lleyn Peninsula, Wales. This map can be used along with my travel notes for the area. Please go to a higher zoom level once you know what area interests you. In at least two cases one marker hides another at the level you get first! CAUTION: With current technology, markers cannot be placed accurately enough to rely on for the mountain walks. The markers on this map should be viewed as rough indicators only. Printable marker list
  • United Kingdom, West Yorkshire: DavidX, February 2007. West Yorkshire. This map gives supplementary information to that in my Yorkshire Travel Notes. See my Yorkshire Dales Google Map for more of this area. Printable marker list
  • United Kingdom, York to Edinburgh: DavidX, This map shows places mentioned in my travel notes Between York and Edinburgh plus one that members in the USA might hate me for forgetting! Printable marker list
  • United Kingdom, Yorkshire Dales: DavidX, September 2006. The Yorkshire Dales in northern England. I've not attempted to do a total introduction to the Dales. It's just an introduction to some of my favourite places. Please don't treat it as a walking map! Printable marker list
