Large TownsNaplesNaples (Napoli) is the largest city in this area. It is big, crowded, noisy, dirty, fabulous, wonderful, exciting - don't miss it. Forget everything you heard about the crime here - it is no worse than Rome. And the pizza is better. Marker is at the train station in Naples. SightsHerculaneumOn August 24, 79 AD the volcano Vesuvius erupted and covered the towns of Pompeii (Pompei) and Herculaneum (Ercolano) in lava. Both towns have been dug out and you can visit them; they are both UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Herculaneum is smaller than Pompeii, but less crowded and not such a daunting visit. Some of the buildings here are very well preserved. PompeiiOn August 24, 79 AD the volcano Vesuvius erupted and covered the towns of Pompeii (Pompei) and Herculaneum (Ercolano) in lava. Both towns have been dug out and you can visit them; they are both UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Pompeii is the larger town of the two. Many parts are well preserved and you can easily see what life was like then. Walk the same roads, see the buildings, explore the ruins of this large town. You will need several hours here, at a minimum. Sorrento WebcamThe Sorrento Webcam is located at the Sorrento Information office at the corner of Via San Cesareo and Via Tasso in the historic center of town, four blocks from Piazza Tasso. (On the MAP version this marker is in the right place, but on the SATELLITE version it does not look correct.) TownsAmalfiBeautiful town on the Amalfi Coast, not as busy as Positano. Many hotels, restaurants, shops. A nice sandy beach. The main road passes closer to the water here and the town rises up on the hillside.
PositanoPositano, a large town built into the hillside. Many hotels, restaurants, shops. Small sandy beach area. Main road goes along the top of the town. RavelloBeautiful town in the hills above Amalfi. It is a bit a narrow and steep road up there. Good hotels, restaurants and shops. Smaller and quieter than Positano. SorrentoSorrento is a good base to see Sorrento, the Sorrento Peninsula and the Amalfi Coast. Buses from here take you to the Amalfi Coast, trains take you to Pompeii, Herculeneum and Naples, ferries to Capri and Ischia. The main part of the town is flat, on a cliff overlooking the Mediterranean. VillagesMaioriSmall town further along the coast from Amalfi, near Minori.
