Churches

Basilica San Marco

Basilica San Marco (St. Marks), on Piazza San Marco in the heart of Venice.

Church of The Frari

Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari is the seond largest church in Venice. Famous for its fabulous artwork, including Titian's amazing "Assumption of the Virgin" altar painting and a lovely "Madonna and Child" by Bellini. An enormous Carrara marble momument to Titian is here, as well as the modern looking mausoleum of Antonio Canova.

SS Giovanni e Paolo

Competes with the Frari as the 2nd largest church in Venice. 25 doges are buried here.

Museums

Accademia

Accademia, museum with the largest collection of Venetian art in existence. Look for the Cycle of St. Ursula (1495 - 1500), Vittore Carpaccio's eight paintings.

Ca' Pesaro Modern Art

The Baroque palace of Ca' Pesaro houses the modern art collection of Venice. It includes a bronze "Thinker" by Rodin, and a creepy "Salome" by Klimt. The building is as impressive as the artwork. Upstairs is a collection of Oriental art. Count Bardi sent home 30,000 pieces from his travels!

Peggy Guggenheim Museum

The only single story palazzo on the Grand Canal houses the Peggy Guggenheim Foundation collection of modern art. Artists presented include Magritte, Picasso, Kandinsky, and weirdly scary paintings by Guggenheim's daughter. Between the museum and the tea room is a peaceful sculpture garden.
