ChurchesBasilica San MarcoBasilica San Marco (St. Marks), on Piazza San Marco in the heart of Venice. Church of The FrariSanta Maria Gloriosa dei Frari is the seond largest church in Venice. Famous for its fabulous artwork, including Titian's amazing "Assumption of the Virgin" altar painting and a lovely "Madonna and Child" by Bellini. An enormous Carrara marble momument to Titian is here, as well as the modern looking mausoleum of Antonio Canova. SS Giovanni e PaoloCompetes with the Frari as the 2nd largest church in Venice. 25 doges are buried here. MuseumsAccademiaAccademia, museum with the largest collection of Venetian art in existence. Look for the Cycle of St. Ursula (1495 - 1500), Vittore Carpaccio's eight paintings. Ca' Pesaro Modern ArtThe Baroque palace of Ca' Pesaro houses the modern art collection of Venice. It includes a bronze "Thinker" by Rodin, and a creepy "Salome" by Klimt. The building is as impressive as the artwork. Upstairs is a collection of Oriental art. Count Bardi sent home 30,000 pieces from his travels! Peggy Guggenheim MuseumThe only single story palazzo on the Grand Canal houses the Peggy Guggenheim Foundation collection of modern art. Artists presented include Magritte, Picasso, Kandinsky, and weirdly scary paintings by Guggenheim's daughter. Between the museum and the tea room is a peaceful sculpture garden. ShopsDona Maria Luisa JewelryCalle dei Saoneri 2738. Wonderful glass and jewelry shop, run by the delightful Dona Maria Luisa. Gianni Basso Print ShopFriendly and gregarious Gianni Basso creates wonderful hand printed notecards, business cards, and bookplates. His printed items make unique gifts. SightsPonte di RialtoPonte di Rialto, a covered bridge connecting the San Marco district to the famous Rialto fish market. Teatro La FeniceLa Fenice Opera House burned down in 1996, and was completely restored by 2005. Incredibly ornate interior; its acoustics are supposed to be marvelous. If you can't attend a performance, try to take a guided tour. Exquisite! |
