Slow Travel Google Map: Italy, Rome Churches

Author: WestSussexBird
Notes: Favorite churches in Rome recommended on Slow Talk (plus a couple of palaces recommended for their frescoes (F).)

Historical Buildings

Palazzo Barberini (F) (SV)

Frescoes recommended by Bill Thayer: "On the sheer kitsch side, my favorite so far is the ceiling by Pietro da Cortona in the Palazzo Barberini in Rome. It's attractive as a composition and as colors, it's a tour de force for some of the trompe-l'?il ? and it's really nasty and bizarre when you actually look at the subject matter."

Villa Farnesina (F) (SV)

KT recommended the fresco of "Galatea by Raphael. All of the villa's frescoes are worth a look - for trompe l'oeil fans (or Rome fans), there's a room there with nice trompe l'oeil views of Rome by Baldassare Peruzzi."
Jane agreed with the recommendation: "I am afraid that many people don't go here. I hope they do!"

Churches

Nicoline Chapel (F) (SV)

The Nicoline Chapel (Nicholas V's Chapel) lies within the Vatican Museums. Its walls were frescoed by Fra Angelico. Recommended by Bill Thayer.

Pantheon (SV)

Recommended by dragonpat, Bill Thayer, Sonia & NanB
- a wonder of the engineering world.

S Agnese Outside The Walls (SV)

Recommended by dragonpat
- off the beaten path in Rome, but worth seeing. St Agnese also has catacombs under it.

- I find myself going back over and over.
Also by Karl Josker
- Give me anything by Francesco Borromini.
- Why use a straight line when a convex or concave line will do?
- A masterful dome the interior of which is second to none.

S Cecilia in Trastevere (SV)

Recommended by Ann M
- mostly for the exquisite sculpture by Stefano Maderno of the Saint in pristine white marble set against a black background. Be sure to visit the crypt downstairs.

S Clemente (SV)

Recommended by CShock & dragonpat

S Costanza (SV)

Recommended by dragonpat & Bill Thayer

S Francesco Ripa (SV)

Recommended by dragonpat

S Ignazio (SV)

Recommended by Ann M
- for the cool faux dome and for the beautiful piazza that it is located on.

S Ivo alla Sapienza (SV)

Recommended by Karl Josker
- Give me anything by Francesco Borromini.
- It's only two and a half blocks off Piazza Navona but hard to find. Down here, through there, under here, and then whoa, that must be it, no straight lines.
- A masterful dome the interior of which is second to none.

S Luigi dei Francesi (SV)

Recommended by WestSussexBird
- for the Caravaggios of St Matthew

S Maria Maggiore (SV)

Twin S Maria churches (SV)

in Piazza del Popolo
Recommended by Ann M
- just for the beauty of their apparent symmetry (but they really aren't identical).
