Restaurants/CafesIl CeppoThis pleasant restaurant has excellent food; we had the first "real" meal of our trip here. Located at the southern end of the Agropoli area. La Chioccia d'OroExcellent restaurant at the entrance to a tiny town in the Cilento. No menu, at least at lunchtime; wonderful food in a delightful relaxed atmosphere. Taverna del PescatoreThis very good seafood restaurant is in the pretty beach resort of Santa Maria di Castellabate, on viale Pepi, near the police station. After lunch, take a nice walk along the shore. Tenuta VannuloAt Tenuta Vannulo, says everyone, the best mozzarella di bufala is made. Water buffalo are raised there, and from their milk comes the very best mozzarella, fresh ricotta and even yogurt. Get there before 11 if possible, much later and the day's production is likely sold out. MonumentsCasal Velino MemorialA very beautiful and moving war memorial, dedicated to those "united in brotherhood by their deaths" is found in this very small village. Flags of many nations surround a plaque, statues, and the main park of the village. Madonna di Novi VeliaThis mountain sanctuary is at a height of 1704 meters, at the end of a winding, rock strewn road. (Don't attempt the climb is the weather is foggy!) MuseumsPaestum MuseumThis museum houses artifacts from the Paestum archaeological site, and should best be visited before visiting the excavations. SightsPaestumThis imposing archaeological site is comprised of three major public buildings (probably temples) of Greek origin and several private dwellings from the later Roman occupation. Please visit the very informative museum just across the road from the excavations. Viticoltori De ConciliisA visit to this small winery is a treat. De Conciliis produces several good reds from the aglianico grape, particularly the wonderful Naima. Note to the wise: This place is very hard to find; leave extra time to get lost. VillagesAcciaroliPretty fishing village with a nice long jetty. You can sit here and have a pizza, or a beer, or both, and watch the boats. The beach is also lovely. Capo di PalinuroHeadland point looking out into the lovely Bay of Palinuro. This is a fishing port, and a tourist destination, but was very quiet in early May. ScarioThis little fishing village is off the path of any tourism, and has extraordinarily clear water. A beautiful place to sit and see. |
