Leaving Florence from Car Rentals on Borgo Ognissanti

Luca (itarchivarius)

Towards Siena (and the A1 south)

At the end of Borgo Ognissanti, turn left onto Via Curtatone, then again left onto lungarno Vespucci.

The next step is the only dangerous one. At the traffic light, turn right onto the Vespucci Bridge. If you go straight, you get a ticket, but spotting the bridge should be fairly easy.

On the other side of the bridge, you have to turn right onto Lungarno Soderini. You meet a stretch of the former walls; you do not enter the small city door, but you turn left onto viale Ariosto, then left onto viale Pratolini that becomes viale Petrarca along the city wall (speed radar here). The short stretch between viale Ariosto and piazza Tasso is viale Pratolini. It changed names a few years ago, as homage to a Florentine writer who wrote extensively about the S. Frediano quarter.

You arrive to the large roundabout in front of Porta Romana with a strange statue of a woman with a person on her head. Turn on the first road right (via Senese). You climb the hill (speed radar) and you go down. At the traffic light, you go on for about 2 kilometers - you meet another radar trap and a string of gas (aka petrol) stations.

As you arrive to the next urban area, Galluzzo, you are forced to turn right onto a narrow street that gets larger after a modern church. That is via Volterrana. If you are heading in the direction of Siena, you are forced to take this detour as via Senese is one-way through Galluzzo. Where via delle Romite intersects with via Volterrana, you bear left again to fun back into via Senese.

After going past the A1, you will come to a traffic circle at the via Cassia, the first exit from the circle will lead you to the A1 at the Certosa exit. The second exit from the circle will lead you to the Raccordo Autostradale Siena-Firenze, the third to the Via Cassia (ss2), the windy, country road through Chianti.

Note: if coming from Maso Finiguerra, as you get out of the car hire, you should have the large cinema on your left. You should go towards the bridge straight in via Melegnano, but you cannot as via Melegnano is a one way street. So, from via Maso Finiguerra, turn right onto Borgo Ognissanti and follow the above directions.
