The historic center of the town is very small and contains only a caffe, a very good restaurant and what looked like a sporting goods store. The alimentari is in the modern section surrounding the historical center. This alimentari is part of the Scudo chain of stores. There are several chains of small stores in Tuscany. This is the deli counter. Wait at the counter until it is your turn to be served. The person behind the counter will look at you and ask you what you want ("dica"). Then one by one you pick out your items. There will be fresh pesto, many types of olives, several types of vegetables in oil, meats, cheeses, etc. Fresh bread is kept behind the counter. If they only have large loaves, you can ask them to cut one in half. This is the cash register. Put your items on the counter. You will be expected to bag them yourself. Sometimes they give you bags for free, sometimes you are charged a small amount. We usually bring a cloth shopping bag with us to use in these stores. |
