Magical stay in renovated old oil mill with lovely family and excellent food. Near Cefalu.

This is an agriturismo outside the small village of Pettineo, about an hour from Cefalu. We stayed on the second floor in the blue room which looked out over a garden and to the mountains on the north.

This old renovated olive oil mill (built in the 17th century) has been lovingly cared for by the Allegra family for generations. The floors are tiled, the windows are full casements, the beds are comfortable, and the bathrooms like everything else are spotless.

Breakfast is laid out by the family and you make it yourself - toast, coffee, yogurt, eggs. The dinners are fabulous: pasta and vegetables, meats, and salad made by Teresa Allegra. She and her husband, Stefano (and on the nights we were there their two sons, Luca and Antonio) talk with their guests. The dessert is simple - fruit grown in the citrus grove onsite.

The grounds are well tended and attractive, with vines on arbors, shrubs and flowers in the gardens. The place is on the side of a hill, out on the edge of town but quiet and remote. The family had some recent troubles in the mud slides so part of the drive (after you enter the gate) was out. We had to park above and walk down - not a problem for us, but might be for some.

The hosts were generous and lovely people and this was one of our most memorable travel experiences, just delightful.
