A brand new agriturismo, comfortable, immaculate, and close to the beach. The brilliant chef/owner makes the most of local bounty, fresh from the garden or sea.

We've just returned from a couple of days at Il Gelso Bianco, a new agriturismo on the spectacularly beautiful Gargano Peninsula (the "spur" on Italy's boot.)

The building is off the main coastal road, though minutes from the beach, and surrounded by garden and orchard. Coming from Rome, the quiet was wonderful. The rooms are large, simply furnished, and immaculate.

Michele, the owner, a chef who's put in 30 years in hotel kitchens, has immense skill both in choosing (in some cases growing) the freshest local ingredients and preparing them simply, traditionally, and deliciously. He made us dinner each night, the first a seafood tasting menu that I will remember always and the other a more traditional series of fabulous courses. He also offers stunning local wines and limoncello.

The breakfasts were simply perfect: fresh and fragrant pastries, yogurt, juice and preserves from homegrown fruit, wonderful coffee.

I'm hoping to get back there very soon.

Since we were there in the "low" season, the room was 50 euros/night for 2 people. Dinner (with wine!) was 30 euros per person.
