A lovely family-run agriturismo offers a warm welcome to visitors wishing to explore this charming, and often-overlooked region, south of Mantova.

We spent a single night at this family farm/agriturismo but we had such a wonderful visit we will be sure to return. The warm and friendly hosts, Antonio and Forienza made us feel welcome, and provided a clean comfortable room and a unforgettable dinner.

There are four bedrooms in the B&B/agriturismo. The rooms were recently renovated, all to a high standard. The rooms are clean, bright, with new, firm mattresses. There are facilities for families with children, and a more romantic bedroom for couples. The setting is a small family farm, with fields of donkeys, turkeys and corn surrounding the house.

We ate dinner at the B&B, and I would strongly recommend that if you stay here, let Fiorenza cook for you. She was a marvelous cook, and we had the best risotto of our lives here. The dinner was simple, but made from their own products, and with great, great care. We watched her cut the vegetables for our salad moments before we sat down.

Fiorenza also provides cooking classes, and had we had more time, we would have certainly taken one. Her chocolate semifreddo dessert was a delicious end to a very special meal.

Mantova is a short 20 min drive away, and the Lago di Gardo another 45 mins. Parma, Modena and Bologna are also accessible, so there are many sites nearby. The area around Suzzara is very flat, and well-lined with bike lanes, so if you enjoy cycling, this is a great place to visit.

We found it a good value, with a night and two 3-course dinners costing 100 euros. You will definitely need a car to reach this location; there are no public transport options -- but it is definitely worth the drive.

Be sure to try Antonio's homemade wine.
