Dorsoduro: B&B Almaviva House

Very cute B&B on quiet Dorsoduro calle. Stay in the main house in the summer, not in the apartment ... mosquitos come in unscreened window.

Almaviva is a beautiful B&B on a quaint canal in Dorsoduro. It's the kind of place you picture when you picture an Italian B&B/hotel. It's a short walk from the vaporetto stop, the Peggy Guggenheim museum, the Accademia, and the best gelato in Venice. ;D

Almaviva has a main house with a front courtyard and quaint back yard, and also has apartments in an adjoining property. Supposedly there is a breakfast and English tea with the owner every day (neither of which we were told about). The owner seemed more concerned about getting his payment in cash than anything.

Our apartment did not have central air (although I believe the house does). We actually thought we were getting a room and not an apartment - so the apartment was a pleasant surprise - or so we thought.

Now mind you - we loved the apartment itself. It was spotless. The kitchen had a small fridge, a 2 burner stove, and a washing machine! It also had a big bathroom, comfy beds, and a cute living room. It is nowhere near tourist garbage and would have been a great place to stay ...

We did Not love the fact that mosquitoes swarmed through the apartment because there were no screens in the windows, and especially because we were unable to close the living room window. The air conditioner was a standing unit on the floor (there are several photos up on Trip Advisor) and the vent went out the window instead of the wall. This meant that the window could not be closed. We were eaten alive.

June is mosquito breeding season here in the US. Must be there, too... A local told us they live in the foundations of the buildings. Don't stay in that apartment in June, ask to stay in the house.
