La Masseria is accurately shown on the website. The rooms are clean but nothing special. What is special is the owner, Mario! He speaks excellent English and makes your stay enjoyable. He will provide directions and suggestions for places to visit and is very entertaining. La Masseria has a view of the sea from the terrace in front of the rooms. Unfortunately Mount Etna cant be seen from the property because of a ridge that is very close. Back off a hundred meters from the property and Etna looms over you. A nice pool and deck is right off the dining room where breakfast and dinner are served. Surrounding the entire property are groves of oranges and palms. Mario is a wonderful, gracious host and a very fine cook. When our bags were lost he called a friend in Rome who worked at Alitalia who tracked down the luggage. Mario went to the airport and picked up the bags and delivered them to our room. Mario also provided excellent meals for us every night. Each morning he went out and got fresh pastries for our breakfast (included in our room rate), which included fresh squeezed blood oranges. I highly recommend La Masseria. Less than a half hour from Catania airport and Taormina, it is a lovely quiet spot to relax. It is about five minutes from the autostrada so you can get to many places quickly. Prices were 35 per person for the room and 15 per person for dinner. I look forward to staying here again. Reviewed by: miedc from Belgium, review #535 When: April 2004
This B&B literally is on the slopes of Mount Etna - You need to climb quite a lot of stairs - so we wouldn't advise this b&b for people who have trouble walking. The road up the Mount Etna to the villages of Milo ... is winding up around the property, but traffic is limited. From the large terraces before the rooms, one has a lovely view over downtown Giarre towards the sea. A swimming pool and nice gardens are available, and on one of the terraces, there is a summer restaurant for guests. In the colder period of the year, meals are served in a lovely decorated room in the main house. Mario, the owner, is a good host and an excellent cook as well. As the property is not signposted on the road, it is wise to call Mario from the square in front of St. Vito's church when arriving in Macchia. Rates depend on the season. We paid 35/person/night for b&b, half board was 50, children got 50% reduction. This review is the opinion of a Slow Travel member and not of slowtrav.com. |
