Biggest breakfast in Italy, served at your table.

Located in the heart of old Lucca, this walk-up B&B is steps away from the Guignigi Tower and close to the amphitheatre. It’s a good walk from the train station and the wall around Lucca is blocks away in every direction. It’s a no frills kind of place – no lift, no air conditioning, no frigo bar, but at 80 euros a night, it’s good value. The room (#2) was big enough for two and the bathroom was large by Italian standards.

Lucca is a bit dusty in June and with temperatures in the low 30’s Celsius (mid-to-upper 90’s F) open windows are a necessity at night. Our room opened onto an interior courtyard and a fan provided by the hosts helped circulate the air, but pigeons frequented the construction scaffolding outside our window. Without screens, we fed a few mosquitoes for the three nights we stayed. There are no late-night bars or clubs in the area and nights were quiet.

No need for an alarm clock. The staff started preparing the breakfast room early but we forgave their animated conversations and clattering plates when we sat down to breakfast. Juice, coffee, prosciutto, cheese (Kraft singles in Italy!) hard cooked egg, hard rolls, jellies and nutella, a slice of cantaloupe and then a slice of Lucchese bread with anise and dried fruit held us well into the afternoon.

English is understood to varying degrees but expect only a basic understanding. The staff, however, were very friendly and accommodating. They even offered guests the use of their computer in reception during the day.

If we return to Lucca we may try another B&B but it would not be an ordeal to return to la Torre.
