When: November 2005

An apartment in the Vatican area of Rome which has been converted into lovely guest rooms.

We have not gotten away from our own B&B in two years, so we were excited to get to Rome. I found the Suites at Via Ottaviano after looking for weeks for a special place at a really good price.

We arrived at a typical Italian palazzo where we were advised to take the elevator to the fourth floor. A lovely young woman named Rosie met us at the elevator and led us to one of the apartments on that floor - the apartment had been converted into hotel rooms.

The idea is not new, but the rooms were: brand new, with a very nice, inviting decor. The rooms are small, about 12 square meters or 120 square feet, but with a nice look and feel. There was a refrigerator (over-sized for the room, with only a few items, but those few items were reasonably priced). The canopy bed was also out of scale for the size of the room, and the room would have felt more airy without it. The bathroom had a hydro-massage tub, and was nicely furnished with quality fixtures.

The owner was happy to take cash. We got small tickets to have breakfast at the cafe across the street, since there are no breakfast facilities in the apartment itself.

Lighting was good (energy saver bulbs, but enough fixtures). The rooms were soundproof in reference to the other rooms, only the hall was a bit noisy. But this was not a problem.

We slept well. No duvets or feather pillows, but acceptable quality bedding and beds. Our backs felt ok in the morning.

The only real drawback was an occasional tram which woke up my husband at night.

We booked through Laterooms.com for a price of 113 euros per night, and felt the price was extremely fair for the quality of the room. We recommend this hotel with ease ... the neighborhood is nice as well.

When: October 2005

Elegantly restored suites in an building from the 1800's, within a 5 minute walk to the Vatican and Metro. Beautiful marble jacuzzi bathrooms, comfortable beds.

Canopy beds, air conditioning, Internet connection, Mini-bar, Satellite TV, hairdryers ... and Angelo, the gracious owner and host. The location and great value (120/night) make this a wonderful choice for Rome.

The breakfast is coffee and cressants from the coffee shop across the street, but what the breakfast lacked, was more than made up by the beautiful rooms. Although not huge, they were adaquate in size, and had wonderful orthopedic mattresses and beautiful percale bed linens, and hardwood floors. The rooms were very quiet and private.

The best value in Rome!
