This one-bedroom B&B is great for those who want to experience something of “real life” Italy. Inexpensive for Bologna and highly recommended.

The accommodation has two comfortable beds (can be made up as one double bed) and a bathroom that is shared with the owners. It is located in a quiet, safe neighborhood only a bit outside the center (several blocks past the Porta San Stefano). It’s a couple of blocks to the #13 bus, which runs every 5 minutes or so during the day increasing to every 15 minutes late at night, or it’s a 20-30 minute walk to the Piazza Maggiore. There are shops, a bank, restaurants and bars within a few blocks. It’s the kind of neighborhood where folks out walking their dogs will respond to your “buongiorno” with a smile. I was a single elderly lady traveling alone, and I never felt unsafe walking back from the bus stop even late at night (and I’m very safety conscious).

But the real reason to stay here is the genuine hospitality of Patrizia and Paulo. They welcome you into their life and home; they are infinitely patient with rudimentary Italian (though Patrizia speaks some English); and they offer help with everything from laundry (Patrizia’s pride and joy is her German washing machine and dryer) to train schedules. Patrizia, who has worked in one of the best restaurants in Bologna, takes great pride in her cooking and will tailor breakfast to your likes or dislikes. She and a friend also offer cooking lessons (whether or not you stay in the B&B).
