When: September 2005

Dishonest owner misrepresented accommodations. She confirmed twin beds with en suite bath reservation. Instead, queen bed and shared bath across hall.

Specific reservations for twin beds and ensuite bath made several months in advance and confirmed by owner Marriella. We decided to stay in the country but close enough to Florence just to enjoy peace and quite. We were two single grandmothers with 3 nights booked at Podere Le Cave stopping over on our way to "Tuscan Women Cook" in Montifollonico.

We took a taxi to the B&B many miles from Florence along a narrow and windy road to a turn off down a narrower steep road to the entrance to Podere La Cave -- which was a long steep narrow rocky driveway. We arrived and were shown our accommodations, a small room with a queen bed, a perfect bridal suite, bathroom across the hall. A kitchen area to share with a couple. No breakfast included.

We were never told that we would need a car so we immediately knew we could not stay there and told the owner we were dissatisfied. We asked if she would make a cell phone call for us to our Italian driver we had used in Rome, she refused! (Stupid us, we didn't have cell phones with us). Instead, insisted on being paid for one night's lodging. She told us to walk up to the main road and wait for a bus to take us into Imprunetta and make our call from a pay phone! We had no choice but to do so.

It was now about 5 p.m. with storm clouds building. We hiked up the steep rocky driveway in our sandals and skirts, up the road to the main highway about 1.5 miles. Waited for a bus, on a narrow shoulder with rush hour traffic speeding by, that never came.

Long story short, we called our driver Antonio, who happened to be in Florence, he picked us up hours later in the rain, drove us back to the B&B, collected our luggage and took us into Florence where he had reserved a room for us at the Hotel River, a wonderful hotel, right on the Arno. Antonio never charged us a cent for "saving us" and even joined us for dinner that night. We paid.

I highly recommend Antonio Pica of Vip Service ph. +347 6035960, email pa.service@virgilio.it, for anyone who wants a driver in Italy. He met us at the airport in Rome, showed us the sights the one day we had there. It was just luck that he happened to be in Florence the next day. Antonio said we should not have paid and should have called the police! If he had taken us there, he would have.
