Casa Portagioia was more than we expected for our special anniversary trip to Tuscany - Wonderful memories and lovely people.

We just returned from Tuscany and our stay at Casa POrtagioia - ’The Casa’ which is now truly our home when in Tuscany.

Our trip to Italy was to celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary and we were so happy to have found 'The Casa'. This Bed and Breakfast villa is situated a few miles from Castiglion among olive trees and vineyards, beautifully landscaped and serene with lovely clean accommodations and outstanding breakfasts, but it is also the personal attention and personalities of our two hosts, Terry and Marcello, that made it all the more memorable.

They are helpful beyond what one expects from proprietors. If a guest needs reservations made for a museum, train or just directions or recommendations, one often expects help from the proprietor, but Terry and Marcello go that extra mile. When our daughter, in the States, contacted them with special requests, whether ordering flowers or setting up arrangements for a surprise dinner celebration for us, they were happy to accommodate.

The other aspect we enjoyed is the company of the other guests - all of us treated as 'old friends' and each of us agreed it was a special place.

Terry and Marcello and their lovely Casa Portagioia are tops.

Luxury accommodation away from the crowds, yet near cultural cities.

Well appointed B&B/hotel near the towns of Castiglion Fiorentino and Cortona, where we found the friendly owners very helpful.

Whilst we were there, a small wedding took place. The gardens, grounds and swimming pool provided a fabulous setting for photographs.

The hotel is 2 hours from Rome, 1 hour from Florence and Siena.

Stunning countryside ideal for relaxation, walking and cycling.

This wonderful bed and breakfast exceeded our expectations in every way.

Finding a place to stay in a foreign country is never easy, especially when you find the property on the internet, do not have personal recommendations, and tend to be somewhat picky to boot! Thus, we arrived at Casa Portagioia with high hopes but ready for anything.

All I can say is that this wonderful bed and breakfast exceeded our expectaions in every way. The property is located in southeastern Tuscany, not far from Cortona. It is a little bit of a drive (about 10 minutes) off the main road and nestled in a beautiful valley.

The room was very spacious, immaculately well kept, and had beautiful views.

Our hosts, Terry and Marcello, were consummate professionals. They made it all look so easy despite the hard work involved on their parts to make our stay as comfortable as possible. They were full of great ideas for touring around, made reservations at any restaurant or museum, and catered to us in every way. Breakfasts were incredible ... assorted cereals, eggs, breads, fresh fruit, yogurt, coffee prepared any way we liked, and more.

Marcello cooked dinner one evening and we were very glad we were there for that. The food was excellent! It was a magical night.

The property is overflowing with flowers, is also immaculate and the pool was absolutley beautiful.

It is very likely that this was the best B & B we ever stayed in and highly recommend it!!!

This really is a find - from the attentive and kind hosts to the wonderful accommodation and stunning location.

Lovely long breakfast on the terrace, light lunch and twice weekly dinner which is as good as it gets. Attention to detail is 5 star yet it retains a relaxing and informal atmosphere and is excellent value for money. We paid 170 euros per night for a double room bed & breakfast.

Terry and Marcello simply take care of everything and nothing is too much trouble. Just go!

If you are looking for peace, activity, great food and frivolity; do not miss Casa Portagioia and its fabulous hosts, Terry & Marcello!

Just now rebooked for 2007. This wonderful, rural, yet sophisticated location is all about relaxation, recreation and discovery.

Perfectly placed slightly off the beaten tourist-track, one has access to all Tuscan hill towns and villages. The food options are tremendous, the grounds and pool exceptional, local festivals are fascinating, local populations are welcoming.

Most remarkable are hosts Terry (Englishman/innocent) and Marcello (Italian/worldly-wise). From booking tickets, cars and restaurants to giving 100% accurate touring advice, we have found them flawless. Marcello is also an accomplished gourmet cook and makes dinner-magic once or twice a week for those who wish to explore Tuscan gastronomic charm (not to be missed!). Breakfasts are healthy feasts, as well.

After a work year in New York City and two weeks working in Paris right before my planned summer retreat at Portagioia, I can't wait. Casa Portagioia restores my soul (and the food is great!)

Absolutely the best! Terry and Marcelo are so Kind, Fun and went beyond to help us. A wealth of infomation; they made our trip. Beautiful and perfect B&B.

The host were Fun and welcoming and kind. We had to change our plans, and cancel our hotel on the riviera and rebook in another country unexpectedly. If Terry and Marcelo did not take of it who knows what would have happened.

The dinners were exceptional, the music fantastic. The rooms and grounds were beautiful! I am so glad we stayed 7 nights. The rates were great. The wine was fabulous. In our opinion, this is 5 star B&B. We will be returning.

We have been asked, "what was your favorite place to stay while in Italy?". Without a doubt, Casa Portagioia!

They've captured what people are looking for in a Tuscan holiday and we truly appreciate all the work that makes it so. Also, the knowlege and recommendations of the region were extremely helpful and took a lot of pressure off. The "wheres" and "whens" such as restaurant recommendations were memorable.

But, above the hospitality, the beauty of Casa Portagioia, it's the professionalism shown that makes it stand out. From the fine wine glasses, the farewell card, the welcome home e-mail, right up to the room upgrade. Owners go the extra distance that people truly remember and appreciate.

We have recommended and will continue to recommend to our friends and all we meet that if they want to experience and enjoy an authentic Tuscan holiday that Casa Portagioia is the place to be.

Totally Chilled in Tuscany .... a real find.

It's been a long time since I have stayed somewhere that makes me want to write about it! Casa Portagioia was a fantastic find. Its name means peace and tranquilty, but it's more than that.

The hotel (or bed and breakfast) is an old farmhouse that's been beautifully, I mean beautifully, restored with every detail checked to provide high quality accommodation. It's also set in one of the most gorgeous valleys of Tuscany.

The rooms are incredibly clean, bright and have all the extras that one would find in an expensive 4 star hotel. The only difference is that it's not full of artificial fixtures and welcome smiles! The owners here seem to have taken on board the fact that travelling is not an easy pastime and can be stressful even for the hardened traveller. Arriving at Casa Portagioia was a breath of fresh air. A perfect welcome and nothing too much trouble.

Although November is not a warm month, the gardens and flowers still looked wonderful and I can imagine what it must be like to just relax by their pool during warmer months. The views are breathtaking and oh so peaceful.

Casa Portagioa is tucked away from the main town. It has easy acesss to the main roads and we were able to visit many of Tuscany's (and Umbria's) treasures including Cortona, Siena, Montepulciano, Assisi, etc. What made it so much easier was the help the owners offered each day in planning our journeys from a trip to Florence with pre booked tickets for the main galleries to a couple of vineyards and wine tasting, and of course up to date information on some great restaurants.

Casa Portagioia does not have a full restaurant service, but they offered dinner twice during our stay. It was certainly one of the best meals we had. It was a 5 course affair and went on for a few hours, but the beauty was that we were entertained by the hosts and all of the guests were totally at ease, relaxed and enjoying one anothers company. We all had wonderful evenings there and many memories to take back home.

Having spent some time around Italy, we felt the prices charged are probably on the low side given the level of accommodation offered. The low season nightly rate for a room is €120 and the high season is €140.

Somewhere special in Tuscany. {3 star}

Cyrpess Lined Drive to Casa Portagioia - 103 trees!, photo by

Our trip covered Venice, Rome and FLorence where we used Slow Travel to help us find accommodation - and a further 4 days in Tuscany's countryside. We found Casa Portagioia via a similar website to SlowTrav and we were not disappointed.

The hospitality and many kindnesses extended to us during our stay at Casa Portagioia were more than anyone could expect. The rooms are very well appointed, absolutely spotlessly clean along with a welcoming drink and other goodies. We had a wonderful time, and their thoughtfulness and useful recommendations greatly enhanced our stay (as did Marcello's artistry with Sue's hairstyling).

We went in the high season and the room rate was €135 per night including a wonderful breakfast.

The owners have done a splendid job on restoring this beautiful property, and anyone who stays here will be comfortable, relaxed, and well taken care of. The grounds are beautifully kept and full of colour. I think they have planted sunflowers which will make their cypress drive just perfect. Breakfasts were so wonderful and relaxed that we often left late and had to make up our time on the roads.

However, we managed to see Montepulciano, Pienza and Montalcino in one day (where our hosts arranged a winery tour). Another day we split our time between Assisi and Cortona and the third day was a trip to Siena and San Gimignano. The last day we spoiled ourselves relaxing around their pool. The views from here, incidentally, are stunning.
