Cavarchino B&B, Gaiole in Chianti - an excellent location for exploring Chianti by car, bike or vespa. It's quiet, clean, and the owners are excellent hosts.

Cavarchino B&B is a great value at 80E per night, in a location where all of the Chianti region is within easy reach by car, bike, or Vespa - which are rented by the tourist office in Gaiole, a 5 minute walk from the B&B.

Andrea and Patrizia, the owners, are wonderful people. They were amazingly helpful from cheering us upwards, as 4 of us arrived by bike up the last 300 meters of steep hill to the B&B; to helping us get medical care for one of our party who needed immediate attention on a weekend; to recommendations for sightseeing and meals.

While new construction, the home is classic Italian other than having a swimming pool. (There is an ongoing debate among longtime residents about how swimming pools installed for foreign travelers is spoiling Tuscany for those who live there.) The rooms were spotless and with ample private bathrooms. Breakfasts were very good.

Most of all Andrea, who is retired, is passionate and knowledgeable. He loves having guests, because he is very social, but does not hover over guests. Patrizia was very kind when we interrupted their lunch asking for help getting a doctor, as my italian is not good enough to have made the call.

There are two really good restaurants right in town, but make sure you get to Il Celliere a Castagnoli, about a 10 minute drive out of town. Andrea can make reservations or give you direction.

When you stay at Cavarchino you will already be making plans for your return visit. It is in one of the smaller, less crowded towns in the Chianti Region.
