Bring on the funky in Cremona. {4 stars}

Cremona was the surprising highlight of a twenty day trip through Italy including Milan, Venice, Florence, and Rome. A town of quiet confidence and substantial depth, far beyond its legendary violins.

Hotel Delle Arti was my "what the heck?" decision. Their website is high-tech and somewhat "out there" in the descriptions. But, the hotel meets and exceeds expectations. It is a stellar piece of design that despite its futuristic appearance and accents, blends very well with this historic and often overlooked city.

As a Design Hotel, one expects and gets ultramodern decor, intelligent accents, and unusually effective lighting throughout the property. The breakfast room is something out of a catalog - well-stocked, terrific coffees, and lit with care. I didn't use the exercise facility, but there is one, and there is a public reading room wit lots of coffee-table books on art and architecture, as well as a Mac with high-speed Internet access. There is no restaurant in the hotel but they have good connections with local establishments. Their small bar/caffe was virtually unused while I was there.

Delle Arti is adjacent to the Cathedral and it is a short walk to several excellent museums.
