Lerici: Doria Park Hotel

Via Doria, 2

A lovely family run hotel which is perfectly located and has fabulous views.

I have been wanting to visit the Doria Park for a long time. I had the chance this past January, when the weather gods decided to conspire to provide me with the best weather ever. Liguria in winter can be stunning, and my stay at the Doria Park did not disappoint.

This is not a fancy schmancy place. It could use a good coat paint on the outside, and the inside is a jumble of a few different design eras. What makes the Doria Park work, however, is something else - it is a combination of attitude, comfort and location.

Attitude: the family owners could simply not be nicer and the staff could not be more helpful. The place feels like family owns and runs it. You feel welcome, and not at all like a number.

Comfort: The rooms are not huge, but the beds are comfortable, and the place is absolutely spotless. I slept well. The breakfasts are generous, with a full buffet, and an orange squeezing machine for juice (this made me very happy as I spend a lot of time squeezing fresh juice for my guests - it is an expense and a luxury, and makes a good impression).

Location: Well, it does not get much better than this. Fabulous views of the Gulf of Poets, perched on a hill above a lovely seaside town. I walked down into town on my first morning and chatted it up with the fishermen who were repairing their nets.

Note: I was in room 453. If you don't mind a small room, then reserve it. Because the clincher is the 200 square foot roof terrace overlooking the Med. I was out there in the middle of the night, in January, just taking it in. Just amazing.

So if you don't need a lot of high style and glamour, but want a lovely place to call home for your stay on the Riviera, check into the Doria Park. I will again, for sure.

Lovely hotel with stunning terrace views and friendly staff.

We really enjoyed our stay at the Hotel Doria Park for its stunning views from our terrace, the friendly and helpful staff, the comfortable and modern room and bathroom and its very good breakfast buffet.

It is located above the town of Lerici (thus the beautiful view of the harbor) so it requires one to be able to walk up many steps. I didn't mind this as it helped to burn off some of the calories from the many great Ligurian meals, but it might be an issue for less mobile travelers.

Our superior room with terrace was a decent size by European standards and the bed was very comfortable. The modern bathroom was on the small side but had lots of hot water and good water pressure. Both were very clean.

We did not need an air conditioner in September but if you do, you share the controls with another room and it can be noisy when turned on. If the noise is bothersome to you, the staff will shut if off or move you to anther room.

The location above the main town makes for a generally quiet location, unless there are a lot of people having drinks on the patio below you with your terrace doors open. This was not an issue for us and was never a problem later at night.

Although an email communication with staff informed me that they could not make restaurant reservations for me except for in their own restaurant (that I did not eat in except for the very plentiful breakfast buffet), once I arrived the staff was happy to do so for me. All of their email communications were prompt and courteous.

The staff was very friendly and all spoke excellent English. We paid 160E for a superior room in high season. It was worth it for the view alone! I would be happy to stay at Hotel Doria Park again should I visit the lovely Liguria area again.

I enjoyed my stay at the Doria Park Hotel. I splurged for a deluxe room with balcony and beautiful view. {3 stars}

I enjoyed my stay in this no-smoking, 3-star hotel.

Although you have to climb many stairs to reach this hotel, the location was still great as it was just off the main piazza in town. I thought my room looked a little worn but my bed was extremely comfortable and the room was a nice size. All the amenities were provided including AC, TV, phone, mini-bar refrigerator, hair dryer, etc. The bathroom was small. I loved sitting out on my balcony both during the day and at night. I had a wonderful view.

I paid 125 euros per night for a single room but the cost has risen. I luckily made my reservation in early January, 2006 before the rates went up.

There is a large staff at this hotel. I thought most were extremely friendly. There also was a computer available for free internet use. The best part about this hotel though were the huge buffet breakfasts. There was even a fresh orange juice machine! You can also request to have a newspaper each morning with many choices to choose from.

I would definitely stay here again.
