Siracusa: Grand Hotel Ortigia

Reviewed by: Mucca212 from CT, review #1818

When: February 2007

Very overpriced and very disappointing 4-star hotel.

We stayed one night at this hotel and then checked out the next morning to find better accommodations. The hotel reception told us that one night was 240 but that they could offer us a room for 200 euros a night if we stayed more than one night. Keep in mind that this was in February - not peak season. In the end, they charged us the lower price because we were so disappointed with our stay after one night, but even that was WAY too expensive for the kind of poor service and poor quality room we had.

The room offered none of the luxury or comfort that you would expect for a 4 star hotel in that price range. It looked and felt more like a Holiday Inn kind of room. Some of the problems with the room: twin beds put together instead of a queen bed for two; broken and dirty grouting in the bathroom; broken towel heater/radiator in the bathroom; frigobar was broken and warm; no extra pillows; no extra blanket; uncomfortable bed; television that was tiny and placed very far away from the bed. Also the wi-fi access was very expensive - 6 per hour.

The hotel bar is in the basement which is unpleasant and uninviting. When we tried to change the temperature in the room, we were unable. We called down to the desk and were told that it was centrally controlled. They said they would change the temperature but I think that since we opened the windows, the heating/cooling system was then disengaged for the room. With the windows open, the noise from the street was worse than New York City.

I just remembered that later we when we checked out we were told that the extra blanket was under the bed in a drawer. But since no one showed us anything in the room, we didn't know that.

If the room had been about 130, I would have said that it was a perfectly fine hotel. But given the exorbitant price, I was appalled that the room was so ordinary and that so many things were broken, old or just dingy.

I'm sure that there are far more pleasant places to stay on Ortigia and at far lower prices.
