Great hotel in a lovely location. {4 stars}

My wife and I stayed at The Grand Hotel this past September. The hotel exceeded expectations.

The view from our spotless room was awesome, overlooking the harbor and the town; we must have taken 20 pictures from our balcony. Hotel was quiet, room spotless, staff very accommodating. Breakfast was excellent, and served on the outdoor patio. Ferry to the Cinque Terre was right outside the front door.

Our only problem was not with the hotel but how we booked our room. When we tried to access the web site for the hotel we were instead directed to "Directa Tourist Promotion." We (stupidly) booked 2 nights with them, and paid in advance. 2 nights before we were to arrive they sent us an email telling us the hotel was full.

We decided to go anyway, and found that there were plenty of rooms; the hotel simply did not like to deal with Directa Tourist Promotion due to their poor business practices. To make a long story short we paid The Grand Hotel directly, enjoyed our stay, came home, and have been trying ever since to get our money back.

Take home lesson: The Grand Hotel is a marvelous place to stay, but deal directly with them, and not with an intermediary!

Luxurious hotel, south of the Cinque Terre. {4 stars}

We stayed here for 3 nights and canít wait to go back! It was a bit of a splurge at about $400.00 CDN a night, but we did get a large corner suite with a separate bedroom for the girls with amazing views from all the rooms.

It also included a vast breakfast buffet, which was our best in Italy thus far. The furnishings were modern and everything was very very clean. Another bonus was that the rooms were all quite large so we didnít have that squished-in feel that so many little seaside hotels tend to have. We had stayed in Lerici before at Hotel Florida and we felt like sardines there.

We liked this hotel for its central location in town as well as its close proximity to the Cinque Terre. The best part was waking up to the morning church bells (not too early, about 7AM ) and watching from our room as the local fish monger sold his fresh catch. The best part of staying in Portovenere is first thing in the morning and then late at night ... Before and after all the day trippers appear one can really get a feel for this place, it is completely magical. The staff was extremely helpful and I give this place a big thumbs up!
