Nice, clean, moderately priced hotel in the town center of idyllic San Daniele. Views of the foothills of the Alps.

Firstly, San Daniele is a beautiful little village perched on a hill in the undiscovered (at least by Americans) Friuli Venezia Giulia region of Northeast Italy. If you like prosciutto, you will love it here, as this region is on par with Parma in terms of prosciutto quality. The region is known for its white wines such as the "Tocai Friulano", along with the very rare red "Tocai Rosso" which should not be missed. San Daniele can act as a gateway to the Dolomites, just head north to Tolmezzo (Villach, Austria is just a few kilometers north of Tolmezzo) and then west into the heart of the Dolomites. Udine is the closest city, and Venice is only about 2 hours away.

Hotel alla Torre is not fancy, but has clean, fairly large rooms all with private (and modern) bathrooms. The reception staff generally speaks English and German, although be prepared that the average resident of this region may not speak much English. A fairly standard and simple buffet breakfast is offered, but there is not a full service restaurant.

The location is at the top of the hill right in the middle of the village center, so there are plenty of bars and restaurants nearby. Parking is also easy and only 1/2 block from the hotel.

I guess I am giving away a secret here, as I'm sure you will find the area around San Daniele as enchanting as I did.

The price was €80 per night for two people, including breakfast.
