I was very pleasantly surprised upon check-in at the Hotel Alpi, after reading several "horror" stories about Rome hotels. {4 stars}

Hotel Alpi is in a great location; a short walk (about 3-4 blocks) from the main train station of Rome. The open-air tour bus stop is at the station and I highly recommend the 2 day get on/get off ticket for 20 euros. You can also walk easliy to a great many sites from the hotel. Don't miss the church of Santa Maria degli Angeli - about 6 blocks from the hotel - the last church Michelangelo built.

We were two women traveling so requested a room with 2 beds which was very spacious, absolutely clean with a great bathroom with tub/shower. We even had a small balcony overlooking the street and piazza. We were on the 2nd floor and even though we faced the street it was not noisy at all. The staff was extremely helpful with directions, recommending restaurants and even lending us umbrella's one rainy day. Breakfast was excellent and quite varied.

I would definitely return to this hotel. We paid 165 euros which included our breakfast. This is a three star hotel but feels like 4 star, for sure. In fact, I stayed at the 4 star Jolly Hotel Leonardo Da Vinci for 3 nights with a group right before moving over to the Hotel Alpi and the room and bathroom were tiny and not very comfortable.

One caution, I did peek into some other rooms when they were being cleaned and a few that faced the rear were very dark as the windows faced other buildings. I would check that out upon making reservations.
