The hotel is located on the S. Rio canal, which runs between the Grand Canal and the Zattere. It is very well located for transport - a few minutes walk to the Accademia vaporetto stop in one direction and 5 minutes to the Zattere vaporetto stop and the Alilaguna boat stop (from the airport) in the other. A major plus point is that, though in a convenient location, it is very quiet - most of the foot traffic going between the Grand Canal end and the Zattere takes a parallel street straight down from the Accademia. It is also quiet inside the hotel - although I had neighbours either side, I was not aware of them at any point (possibly due to the padded fabric wall covering). The desk staff are polite, multilingual and professional. Although there is no lift, a porter was immediately on hand at check in to take my luggage up to my room. There is a small lounge area next to Reception, with a PC with free internet access (guests are given a code for the duration of their stay). My single room was small (a single bed) but adequate for my needs with a desk, fridge and wardrobe with safe - I peeked into the neighbouring double room as I was passing and that seemed a decent size for two. The modern bathroom was small but well planned, with a separate, sliding door shower cubicle, toilet, sink and bidet with good mirrors and lighting. It was very clean from the start and housekeeping maintained a good standard throughout my stay. There was individually controlled aircon/heating - neither of which I needed and external shutters to close at night. I had a room overlooking a side alley, with a little balcony with flowers, from which I could see the canal. I noted a terrace at the back of the first (i.e., floor above ground) floor, with tables and chairs, which would make a charming spot in warmer weather. Breakfast (included) is served in a room just behind the lounge and is very good. The waitress takes hot drinks orders then you help yourself to a plentiful and fresh buffet. This comprises a large bowl of fresh fruit salad, individual fruits, boiled eggs, a selection of meats and cheeses in a cooler, yoghurts, a variety of breads (plus toaster and preserves) and pastries, cereals and juices. I booked directly through the hotel's website, with no problems. They have a variety of offers which can make this a very good value hotel, e.g., I was staying over 3 nights and this attracted a good discount. If you want to phone to make a particular request or query, the desk staff are very helpful. I would highly recommend the area and the hotel. Hotel American could easily become my favorite place to stay in Venice. It is within walking distance of the Accademia, the Peggy Gugghenheim galleries, the zattere and many wonderful shops and restaurants. The rooms are beautifully decorated and very comfortable; the staff is attentive, the breakfast plentiful and the extras – free internet service and boat transfers to Murano glass factories – are a nice touch. I would not hesitate to recommend this hotel. This review is the opinion of a Slow Travel member and not of slowtrav.com. |
