Great hotel in every aspect other than street noise. {4 stars}

The location was unbeatable--just a few blocks from the ruins at Pompeii and two different rail lines (national and Circumvesuviana metro line).

Staff were all delightful, room was immaculate, delicious and generous breakfasts. There were several pleasant decks with tables and chairs.

HOWEVER, the noise at night was truly dreadful. It may be that there are rooms in a quieter part of the hotel, but our room sounded as if the Indy 500 were on every night just outside the window. Finally that would stop and then the trash trucks would start up just a few hours later. I am a super-robust sleeper, and even I had a really difficult time with the noise level.

The modern town of Pompeii has good and bad aspects. For the good, it is not very touristy at all once you are more than a block from the ruins, so restaurants are quiet and well-priced and you feel like you are in a real town. For the bad, it's a small town, with not much to do other than see the ruins and the Cathedral.

It worked well as a base for us, with two small kids who were mostly interested in the ruins--we also took the train to Herculaneum, and then a bus to Mt. Vesuvius itself. If you are ok having a big day, nice dinner, and quiet evening, Pompeii will suit you fine.
