Lovely Hotel {3 star}

The beautiful Hotel Antico Doge is a newly opened 12th Century palazzo and previous home to a 12th Century Doge located on the borders of the Cannaregio/Santa Croce sections. It is less than 5 minutes from the Ca’ D’Oro vaporetto (Line No. 1) stop and less than 8 minutes from the Rialto Bridge (Line No. 82) stop, and less than 12 minutes to Piazza San Marco.

The hotel entrance hall is small and between an Internet shop and a clothing shop, but opens into a comfortable, small reception area nicely appointed in a tasteful rose color with Murano glass wall sconces and a comfortable, welcoming feeling. The hotel faces Campo SS. Apostoli across a small pedestrian footbridge over the Rio D. Santi Apostoli where Gondolas are moored and available.

Our accommodation was a Junior Suite with a courtyard view at Euros 245 and included breakfast, an excursion with private boat to Murano Island, a city map, 10% discount parking at Piazzale Roma and free entrance to gambling casino. We took advantage of the 10% discount offered if you pay cash. The room was small but beautiful with walls covered in lovely rose-colored Damask and lush draperies. The bath was spotless and complete with every amenity including a magnification mirror (as a baby boomer I always appreciate these little touches). Our courtyard view left much to be desired as it looked out onto a neighboring derelict building … but much in Venice is in decay … and probably hopefully waits for renovation efforts.

Breakfast was buffet and served in a lovely gilt and brocaded Breakfast room with fine linens and silverware. Choices included cereals, fruit, prosciutto, yogurts, tarts. Coffee, cappuccino and baskets of rolls were served to your table by domestic staff in gray uniforms with white aprons/collars. They seemed to be stiff somehow in their service both mornings and eager to be doing something else … but the reception staff were friendly and pleasant.

We thoroughly enjoyed the location of Antico Doge that some call off the beaten track. We quickly got to Piazza San Marco each morning and the Accademia without missing a beat. The pace of Venice was so much faster than we had expected … in all sections.
