Very comfortable, reasonably priced, tastefully decorated hotel. Superior service from owners. {2 star}

Lake Como/Beautiful church, photo by Cigale

My husband and I stayed at the Aurora Hotel for five nights. Situated only 10 minutes drive away from the beautiful town of Bellagio, it's wonderfully placed to make the most of the lovely area of Lake Como. Margherita and her family were warm and so helpful, made us very welcomed and couldn't offer enough help. When we arrived we were exhausted the first night so I went down to talk to Margherita, letting her know we would not be joining the dining room for dinner, and she so kindly offered to have a plate sent up. We wanted to experience some of the local cuisine and she offered to have a plate of local cheeses and salami sent up with a bottle of local wine, "Pirovano Calco, Barbar Vivace." This simple but amazing meal was one of our favorite experiences. We finished it off with some limone gelato. Outstanding.

The rooms are tastefully done. Our bathroom had recently been re-done and the shower was a great treat; the water was always hot. We had a little balcony with two chairs, to watch the amazing views -- there was daylight until allmost 10pm. This became a great place to hang out and have a glass of wine and munch on the goodies we bought down in the resturant and brought up to the room.

The Hotel's position is next to the road, which means that it can get a little noisy at times, with cars and scooters going by, but this is outweighed by the magnificent view across the lake. You have a complete view of the castle where "Stars Wars" was filmed. Be sure to have Margherita set you up with the tour inside. This should not be missed! In the morning Margherita's mother and father in law served an amazing buffet-style breakfast. The "chocolate croissants" were fantastic. Her father-in-law can make a mean cappuccino; hot and with a wonderful taste. There is a little bar next to the breakfast room where some of the locals come in to chat with the owners and share a morning cappuccino. The hotel restaurant produces some lovely meals. They brought a chef all the way from Naples, who commands the kitchen in making the best wood burning oven pizza!!!!(They make over 50 types.) The entire family is involved with serving the meals. They are famous for their food in Lezzano and in the evening the restaurant fills with guests and locals. If you like lamb, the little lamb ribs - grilled to perfection over an open fire - were fantastic. This family uses only the finest local produce available, e.g., lake fish, vegetables, wines, and cheese. Do not miss the gelato and other desserts. We wanted to stay an extra night so we did not have to stay in Milan to catch our flight. Margherita arranged a taxi to drive us to the airport the next morning. This made our trip home less stressful. Also, she let us know that breakfast would be available that morning.

Margherita and her sister-in-law are amazing women, along with the rest of her family. There was nothing she or her family would not do to help us make our vacation a memorable one. She let us know where to buy the best Parmesan cheese, and at the store they even vacuumed sealed it for travel.

You can use the kayaks and canoes provided by the attached club, or learn to water-ski or wakeboard at the ski school. Be sure to take the water taxis to the other towns on the lake. If you're looking for a special place away from home, this is the place to be. They have other apartments to rent. They have restored a house and if your family is large, ask her about this new home for rent. (See the website.) Rooms are around 85 euros and up.

The only drawback to this hotel: if you do not have a car, you must use public transportation -- boats or buses. We arrived via bus. That in itself was a trip from hell, because we sat at the back of the bus. The bus driver was very nice, though, and dropped us off about 50 feet from the hotel. We had the same driver when we went to Como for the day and that time we made sure to sit in the front. It made all the difference in the world.
