Lucca: Hotel Carignano

"Okay" hotel out in the Lucca countryside.

The Hotel Carignano outside of Lucca is a modern hotel. Supposedly a three star facility (probably because of its ability to host large meetings), but I would rate it more of a two. No pool. The location is in a beautiful rural spot. My husband enjoyed running almost every morning when we were there, but the facility itself is somewhat shabby and the staff looked weary and uninterested in their guests.

The rooms were clean and the beds were extremely comfortable, but again shabby, with threadbare carpet and a color scheme from the early 1980's. The bathroom was large and had a nice bathtub and handheld shower, no curtain. The room was hot, the airconditioning took forever to cool it down, but we stayed there during August and this was definitely the hottest weather we had during our trip. The maid service was erratic and indifferent.

The location was very convenient to Lucca but a little tricky to find after dark. The breakfast was the worst we had in our stay in Italy. The breakfast room was very hot, no airconditioning, and the food was very plain. No fresh fruit, only one selection of bread and on several mornings, after 9 a.m., hardly anything was left. They had a restaurant on the premises. We didn't eat there; it never looked busy.

This was our most expensive accommodations at €92 a night, but it was our least favorite hotel. This must have been the best bargain on Venere when I booked it, but I would do more research into accommodations around Lucca if I were to go again. Or I'd see what else was available in that price range or maybe choose something a little more expensive.
