Good location and value for the money. Beware of the construction in neighborhood.

Although this hotel has gotten a bad rap on some hotel review boards, I liked it. I chose it for the location, near Trastevere’s main piazza, and for the price (€130/double).

My room, No. 57, was good, with a big, firm bed, two windows, a large wardrobe, a small desk and chair, TV with CNN and CNBC. The bathroom was new, all white, roomy, with good towels and a stall shower only. The windows overlooked the side of the hotel, so there wasn’t much traffic noise. There was a remote for the heating/air-conditioning unit, neither of which I used.

Breakfast is included in the price; the cappuccino was OK, the pastries ordinary, no fresh juice or fruit, just the canned variety. The Cisterna keeps a frigo off the lobby stocked with soft drinks and bottles of white wine at reasonable prices. The entrance door is generally kept locked, you ring the bell and it clicks open. There is someone on desk duty 24 hours a day. Nice people.

For me, the drawbacks were: dim bulbs in the bed lamps, making it hard to read without the ceiling light on, an excessively high-mounted TV, and the condition of the street outside, which was filthy and grafitti-marred. But that’s the case in most of Trastevere. At the time I stayed at the Cisterna, a large building across the street was being completely gutted, causing a lot of white dust and work-day noise at the front of the hotel.

Nearby amenities include the piazza S. Maria in Trastevere, the ChaKra wine bar, and a Standa supermarket two blocks away.
