A centrally located hotel close to the Bridge of Sighs and Piazza San Marco. We arrived at 4pm and were shown straight to our canal-view room. In addition there was a small "Juliet" type balcony which you could stand on and from there see the Bridge of Sighs. The room was smallish, but well appointed with a wallcovering of damask material. There was a stunning Murano glass chandelier above the bed (it was one of the nicest we saw on the whole trip including the factory tour!!). The bathroom was marble and had all the necessary fitments; a nice room. There was a safe in the room and a small TV. There is a lift and a bar serving meals, snack, drinks and cocktails. I sampled a Bellini and a Rossini which were lovely. Breakfast was served in a small well decorated interconnecting suite of rooms and was adequate, though not overly plentiful. We paid €5 extra on one morning for an omelette which was well cooked and tasty. The hotel arranges for a trip to Murano free of charge - obviously you are taken to their "special" glass factory and are given the hard sell. We were not too concerned about this and enjoyed our trip. It was funny, though, how we struggled to get out of the glass factory compound and into Murano proper. We felt almost captured until we found the exit gate which was well hidden. It was obvious they did not want you to see other glass sellers if you had come across on their boat!! The hotel also arranges gondola trips for guests at a cost of €25. We thought this was very reasonable and enjoyed the trip immensely. My one caveat would be to make sure you get in the gondola first to get the best seats, as with six sharing, someone loses out in the comfort stakes!! Also our gondolier did not give us a commentary of the sights we were passing which would have been a bonus. I recommend the Hotel Columbina to anyone wanting a well appointd, well located hotel with canal views. At €295 per night we were satisfied with the amenities but would probably stay somewhere cheaper next time. This review is the opinion of a Slow Travel member and not of slowtrav.com. |
