This is a 4 star property within walking distance of Cremona's center. My husband, sister and I had just come from several idyllic days in the countryside of Le Marche. We drove up to the Hotel Continental and gasped. It has one of those dreadful concrete, post-war facades that hides who-knows-what behind the hideous gray exterior. I found myself apologizing profusely to my husband and sister. I offered to go in and pay for our rooms and leave immediately in order to find something of charm. My husband reminded me that one of our waiter friends lives in just such a building in Bologna and the interior of his apartment is beautiful. We also have friends in Rome in this type of building, yet you feel as if you are in another world when inside their apartment. "Let's give this a chance, you really wanted to come to Cremona". Okay! The lobby is large and has several seating groupings of pale yellow, tufted leather sofas and barrel chairs. Lots of plain wood panelling and persian carpets. There are glassed in wall displays of Cremonese violins, just to get you in the mood for the city. There is a large restaurant (which we never tried) which I think caters mostly to business meetings. They also have a bar, which to me, is a plus because I love having a post-dinner grappa poured by the hotel barman. My sister had a double room for single use and my husband and I had a standard double. Both rooms were large, had a couple of large windows that opened and had huge bathrooms. Our bathroom had the ugliest tile I had ever seen, but it was spotless, had beautiful amenities, a huge tub and powerful shower. My sister's bathroom was more up to date and if you peek at the hotel website bathroom pics, you will see sand-blasted glass countertops, etc. The hotel is a little bit of a mixed bag in terms of the facade and ugly bathroom tile (our room). But I recommend it because of the genuine warmth of the welcome, large rooms, larger bathrooms and cleanliness. Oh, the breakfasts were decent with yogurt and fresh fruit added to the usual hotel breakfast buffet. This review is the opinion of a Slow Travel member and not of slowtrav.com. |
