Good budget choice in Sorrento. Recommended with some qualifications.

I can recommend Hotel Desiree as a good budget choice in Sorrento with some qualifications.

First, you have to be in decent physical shape to walk the 10-15 minutes from the city center to the hill. We enjoy walking and were happy for the exercise to counteract our food and drink but by the third day, we were a little put off by the traffic fumes. It was a perfectly safe walk with good sidewalks but you did encounter some bus exhaust. Also, on our last day there was a smell in the bathroom that seemed as if there was a septic issue (it had been fine before that).

For 100 a night however, we were overall very pleased with the Desiree. Its location above the Marina Grande made for spectacular views on our walks to town. The room we had requested, number 1, had a private balcony and a beautiful seaview. The bed was comfortable, bathroom fine with a hand held shower in a bathtub and the room of an average size by European standards.

Hotel Desiree is located right next door to the 4 star Hotel La Tonnarella and shares the same beach by private elevator. There is also a restaurant in the Hotel Tonnarella, should you not feel like trekking to town. (We did not try the restaurant.)

The staff was as advertised, extremely helpful, friendly and talkative (in a good way). English was spoken by all.

The breakfast room afforded another beautiful view by the window. Very fresh croissants and bread were served for breakast and the coffe was quite good.

Payment is cash only and they do not yet have a website or email, so reservations must be made by fax from the US. They told us they were working on a website and hoped to have it in place soon.
