When: May 2010

If you've had enough of downtown Rome, stay on the leafy Aventine hill at the Hotel Domus Aventina. {3 stars}

The Hotel Domus Aventina is next door to the Church of Santa Prisca on one side and a grade-school on the other. There is very little traffic on this street; the neighborhood is mostly residential. If you are standing on the Palatine Hill and you look over the Circus Maximum to the hill opposite, that is the Aventine. If you go over the Aventine, you are in Testaccio.

I have stayed at this hotel twice - May 2004 and May 2010. On both occasions, it was a welcome respite from the noise, the crowds and the motor scooters of the Centro Storico.

I booked a single and was given a large room with a king-size bed, a couch, end tables, a desk and a large bathroom. The unit opened to a private ground floor terrace.

The breakfast room was comfortable and well-stocked. I believe that in high season, breakfast dining is also outside on the terrace.

Positives: quiet location, large room, large bath, private terrace on first floor; walk to Circus Maximums and Metro stop; walk to Testaccio. Bus to the Stazione Termini stops a half-block away. Pleasant front desk staff who speak English.

Negatives: bed and pillows not very comfortable; no wi-fi; I've heard that there is no elevator but both my stays were in a first floor room.

I would stay here again and would recommend it to anyone who wants to stay out of the Centro Storico for a few days.

E150; three stars.
