When: December 2004

A decent, very inexpensive hotel in the heart of Bologna; recommended with some reservations - see my review. {3 stars}

I took a language class it Bologna the week before Christmas, and stayed at 2 different hotels there - see review for Hotel Paradise.

This hotel is 1 short block from the Piazza Maggiore, the center of this very pedestrian-friendly city, and is near enough to things that the location makes up for some of its deficiencies.

I needed a place to stay while I was already in Bologna, and had heard good things about this place. So I stopped by and asked about rates and availability, and was quoted a price of 60, and shown a room. Later, I called, asking if I could come a day earlier, and they said it would be fine. This is the reason I think I got a slightly larger room. Oddly, they only charged me 50 each night.

It has a 3-star rating (I would think just barely), and the prices quoted on the door to my room were, as always, much higher.

So, this is a way of saying that perhaps the time of the year allowed me a great deal, and that in addition, I might have benefitted from someone's capricious pricing and being bumped up to a better room.

The hotel has maybe 15 rooms; breakfast is provided, though I never sampled it; all workers speak only Italian.

The room was clean and comfortable, though a little ragged - some torn wallpaper, etc. The night worker smoked and somehow this managed its way into my room late at night, though just barely.

During my last night, someone moved in next door, and apparently the walls are quite thin, as I could hear their voices and t.v. loudly enough that I thought they'd left their door open. My window opened to a light well, though I had 2 skylights.

The bathroom was renovated and very clean, though there was some mildew on the paint in the alcove above the shower. Otherwise, the bathroom was a real plus - roomy, clean, large sink, etc.

Another odd thing was that the morning I left, the clerk told me that apparently they didn't accept credit cards, the machine was broken, or he didn't know how to work it. This was 5:00 on Christmas morning, and he looked confused about where to find my bill, so he may not have been a regular worker, and my Italian wasn't keen enough to figure out what he was saying exactly.

Its pluses are its price, location and general cleanliness.
