Great location. Fantastic service. Excellent room. We would stay there again in a heartbeat.

We spent one night in Orvieto and I agonized over whether to stay here or at the Hotel Virgilio. I am very happy that we chose the Duomo. The Virgilio is right on the piazza and while that might be good for some, the location of the Duomo is off the piazza and down a level or two and felt slightly, but nicely removed and far more private.

We stayed in a Junior Suite and paid 140 euros, which included a very nice breakfast. The room was on the top level of the hotel. It was huge and had a great view of the Duomo to one side and a view of Orvieto out the other side. It was clean, well appointed, well maintained and surprisingly quiet. The bed was comfortable too. Everything worked and we had no problems.

Service was excellent. They made lunch reservations for us at La Palomba via an email before we arrived. We ended up being an hour late into Orvieto due to car rental snafus in Rome and the woman at the front desk called La Palomba when we arrived. They held the table for us and we had an awesome lunch.

I have nothing to compare this against, but I suspect it is one of the best hotels in the town of Orvieto itself. We'd stay there again (hopefully for longer next time) in a heartbeat. The owner was a bit brusque, but that didn't bother us as everyone else was lovely.

When: May 2009

Clean, modern, friendly hotel right by the Duomo (cathedral) in Orvieto. Good air conditioning, elevator, Internet, English channels on TV. They handle parking your car. {3 stars}

We were a small group of friends who took 3 rooms at the 3-star Hotel Duomo in Orvieto, late May, 2009. It was 90 euros for a single room, 130 euros for a double. The weather was plenty warm then, and our previous hotel in Rome hadn't turned on their air conditioning yet, but Hotel Duomo had great air conditioning, the only mini bar I found in my 3 weeks in Italy, and large, comfortable, clean rooms with roomy bathrooms and large showers.

Of course the hotel's main attraction is the location, just steps from the main square and duomo. The hotel has a modern look and feel, an elevator, Internet, and some English language channels on the TV. Also, there's impressive art on the hotel walls that's copied from the famous last judgment frescoes in the duomo.

Breakfast was very good. It starts at 7:30 and don't even think about arriving at 7:29 because they block the door with a table until they're ready to serve. There's a patio with a view of the side of the duomo and we enjoyed our time out there in the cool of the morning.

The hotel is very clean and in a quiet location so noise was not a problem. They parked our car for us in their private garage, and brought it back to us upon departure, offering advice on the easiest route to get out of town. The restaurant advice they gave was also excellent.

We had no complaints about Hotel Duomo and, indeed, agreed that it was one of the best places we stayed in Italy.
