A lovely small 4 star hotel near the Vatican.

Steve and I spent our last 3 nights in Rome on our August-September 2003 trip at this hotel. It was recommended to us by Peter from the SlowTalk message board. We loved the hotel. On our trips to Rome, we stay in different hotels in different neighborhoods as an excuse to explore different areas of the city.

Hotel Farnese is located on the Vatican side of the Tiber, 20 minutes on foot from Piazza Navona, 10 minutes from Piazza del Popolo. It is close to the Vatican and to the main shopping street, Via cola Di Rienzo. One side of the hotel is on a somewhat busy street (Viale Giulio Cesare) with buses and a subway stop one block away (Lepanto). The other side of the hotel is on a quiet side street.

We had the penthouse! I don't know why - I booked a regular double through our Venere clickthru. Our room was like a little building on the roof. We took the elevator to the roof, walked across a public (but never used) balcony, to a door that went to our room, which had a private terrace (fenced off and with big bushes to separate it from the rest of the roof terrace). The room was large, the bathroom was large and the terrace was bigger than some hotel rooms we have stayed in.

The terrace had nice views - not "drop dead" - over the rooftops to the dome of St. Peters. The bed was very comfortable and the furnishings very good quality. There was a nice desk to work at and a couple of chairs.

The breakfast room was good and for an extra charge you could have breakfast brought to your room. Be sure to ask for espresso instead of the usual bad hotel coffee that is served at breakfast in this hotel and most hotels.

The staff were very nice, polite and efficient. They carried our bags to our room and took them back down again when we were leaving. They ordered our car for the airport. They always knew who we were when we entered the hotel (how do they do that?).

I highly recommend this hotel if you are looking for a good quality hotel out of the historic center. The room rate is good for a 4 star hotel.
