Bellagio: Hotel Florence

Reviewed by: teezee from MA, review #2362

When: August 2008

Prime location on the lake in lovely Bellagio

We reserved the room with a patio that opened on to the lake front, and it was worth the extra euros! Gorgeous people and lake watching on your own veranda, bottle of wine in hand.

High ceiling, wonderfully decorated and colorful room showing off the silks of the region. The bathroom was among the most beautiful I've seen but its utility was limited for us: the slipper clawfoot tub in the middle of an acre of tile was like a beautiful seducer waiting to make sure we fell splat on the floor. Not a grab bar or aid to enter and exit it in sight. If you are young and agile, probably not a problem.

As with so many bathrooms in Europe there is an inexplicable step up into the bathroom, so we had to memorize it to make sure we didn't fall on our face in the middle of the night.

Breakfast is quite good. The restaurant on the lakefront is good to excellent, and of course you will pay the usual premium for eating by the waterside but no more than less good restaurants charge in Bellagio. The bar in front of the restaurant is a prime people watching stop and the ferry is right across the street.

The hotel has a sauna, steam room and hot tub, the use of which costs an additional fee of 25 euros for two days of access.

On line, our room was booked for 180 euros a night, with a 10% discount for paying your bill in cash. While this put it in the "splurge" category for us, we didn't begrudge the price and felt it was a fine choice in a pricy environment. The service was pleasant and efficient and I would certainly visit again, though I might have to check whether there is a less lethal bathroom!

Absolutely beautiful! Great people watching from terrace not to mention view...Attentive staff; great breakfast. {3 stars}

Perfect location for family; easy walk to anywhere. Rooms are lovingly furnished and very clean. High ceilings, great beds and beautiful dark wood floors.

Breakfast room is gorgeous and the food is excellent including eggs and bacon and every kind of bread and rolls you could want. We had 2 rooms with the shared terrace on the lake--what a treat! Cost about 180/night for each room.

When: 1995

A charming hotel in a charming town, with spacious rooms furnished with antiques.

If you want to stay at the 3-star Hotel Florence, be sure to make reservations way ahead, especially if you want a room fronting Lake Como. And even further ahead if you want a room with a terrace! It's a family-run hotel with friendly service, and tastefully-decorated rooms -- at half the price of the neighboring Hotel Serbelloni.
